  1. 6. Synthesis of Ring-fused Peptidomimetics : Interacting with Amyloid Fibrils

    Author : Dan E. Adolfsson; Fredrik Almqvist; Anna Linusson; Morten Grötli; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic chemistry; synthesis; peptidomimetics; thiazoline fused 2-pyridones; Alzheimer s disease; Parkinson s disease; Amyloid; Amyloid-beta; alfa-Synuclein; method development; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease are the two most common neurological disorders in humans. Both conditions involve progressive death of neurons in the central nervous system, decline in bodily functions and eventually (and invariably), death. So far, no cure exists and the available treatments can only ease symptoms. READ MORE

  2. 7. Diaryliodonium Salts : Development of Synthetic Methodologies and α-Arylation of Enolates

    Author : Marcin Bielawski; Berit Olofsson; Antonio Togni; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hypervalent Iodine Compounds; One-Pot Synthesis; Regiospecific Synthesis; Aromatic Substitution; Aryl Iodides; Arenes; Boronic Acids; Heteroaromatics; Arylations; Reaction Mechanisms; Density Functional Calculations; Large Scale Synthesis; Organic synthesis; Organisk syntes; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis describes novel reaction protocols for the synthesis of diaryliodonium salts and also provides an insight to the mechanism of α-arylation of carbonyl compounds with diaryliodonium salts.  The first chapter gives a general introduction to the field of hypervalent iodine chemistry, mainly focusing on recent developments and applications of diaryliodonium salts. 3. 8. Synthesis of Small Molecules Targeting ADP-Ribosyltransferases and Total Synthesis of Resveratrol Based Natural Products

    Author : Anders Lindgren; Mikael Elofsson; Nicholas Westwood; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic synthesis; quinazolinone; ARTD; PARP; total synthesis; polyphenols; bensofuranes; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : Diphtheria Toxin-like ADP-RibosyltransferasesThe Human ADP-ribosyl transferases (ARTDs) are a group of poorly studied enzymes which are believed to be involved in e.g. DNA repair, protein degradation, transcription regulation and cell death. Medicinal chemistry programmes aimed at developing selective inhibitors of these ARTDs were initiated. READ MORE

  4. 9. New Methodologies in Organic Chemistry: Applications to the Synthesis of α-Amino Acids and Natural Products

    Author : Sebastian Hirner; Peter Somfai; Varinder Aggarwal; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organic synthesis; 2-Vinylaziridines; 3-Pyrrolines; Ringexpansion; Rearrangement; Anisomycin; Total synthesis; α-Amino acids; Arylglycines; Weinreb amides; α-Arylation; Grignard reagents; Umpolung; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the development and application of new synthetic methodology in organic chemistry. The first part describes the development of a new protocol for the synthesis of 3-pyrrolines by means of a microwave-assisted ring-expansion reaction of 2-vinylaziridines. READ MORE

  5. 10. Organic Azides : Functional Molecules and Materials

    Author : Giampiero Proietti; Peter Dinér; Per I. Arvidsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; perfluorinated Aromatic Azide; Photoactivatable; fluorophores; aggregation-induced emission; sulfonimidamides; sulfoximes; chiral auxilary; organogel; azides reduction; Ni-B; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis stems from the chemistry of the azido group, and more specifically from the unique reactivity of perfluorinated aromatic azides and how to use this reactivity to access new types of molecules to enable new applications in asymmetric synthesis and materials.In the first section of this thesis, a photoactivatable fluorescence probe is presented, where the non-luminescent azide was activated via a UV-light-promoted intramolecular N–H insertion reaction forming a fluorescence emitter.
