  1. 1. CD47–SIRPα : an interaction of importance for bone cell differentiation

    Author : Cecilia Koskinen; Pernilla Lundberg; Per-Arne Oldenborg; Riku Kiviranta; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CD47; SIRPalpha; osteoblast; osteoclast; SHP-2; Akt2; cell research; cellforskning;

    Abstract : Bone tissue is continuously remodeled by bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts, in processes tightly regulated by hormones, cytokines and growth factors. CD47, a ubiquitously expressed protein, and one of its ligands, signal-regulatory protein alpha (SIRPα), are two cell-surface proteins belonging to the immunoglobulin (Ig)-superfamily. READ MORE

  2. 2. Insulin-coated titanium implants - a potential therapy for local bone regeneration

    Author : Behnosh Öhrnell Malekzadeh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Insulin; Titanium; Bone; Implant; Osteoblast; Immobilisation;

    Abstract : Background: Insulin is a hormone that regulates glucose metabolism, however, it is also important for bone formation. The anabolic effect of insulin on bone could open up alternative therapies when it comes to local bone regeneration. However, this requires a method for local administration of insulin. READ MORE

  3. 3. Nano-porous Alumina, a Potential Bone Implant Coating

    Author : Marjam Karlsson; Karin Caldwell; Mats Boman; Matteo Santin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; Nano-porous aluminium oxide; Biomaterial; Hard tissue implant; Surface topography; Osteoblast; Biocompatibility; Neutrophil; Inflammation; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes a method of growing a highly adherent nano-porous alumina coating on titanium implant materials, a design which might be useful in hard tissue replacement. Alumina layers were formed by anodisation of aluminium, which had been deposited on titanium and titanium alloys by electron beam evaporation. READ MORE

  4. 4. miRNA and Asymmetric siRNA : Small RNAs with Large Effects on Bone Metabolism

    Author : Navya Laxman; Andreas Kindmark; Sara Windahl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; miRNA; cp-siRNA; RNAi; bone; Osteoblast; Sequencing; Differential expression; Wnt pathway; Biology with specialization in Molecular Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : RNA interference (RNAi) is a post-transcriptional gene silencing process elicited by double-stranded RNA, such as micro-RNA (miRNA) and small interfering RNA (siRNA). They are 18-25 nucleotide long, small non-coding RNAs acting as critical regulators in eukaryotic genome expression. READ MORE

  5. 5. The neuropeptide VIP and the IL-6 family of cytokines in bone : effects on bone resorption, cytokine expression and receptor signalling in osteoblasts and bone marrow stromal cells

    Author : Emma Persson; Ulf Lerner; Andreas Kindmark; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; osteoblast; bone resorption; cytokines; IL-6; neuropeptides; VIP; transcription factor; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Bone tissue is continuously degraded and rebuilt to respond to the needs of the body. Cells of the osteoblast lineage are responsible for the formation of bone, whereas the resorption of bone tissue is carried out by osteoclasts. READ MORE
