  1. 1. Wild plants can improve their rhizosphere chemistry in acid soils

    Author : Marion Schöttelndreier; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; wild plants.; time pattern; soil heterogeneity; rhizotrons; rhizosphere; pH; oxalic acid; nutrient availability; malic acid; hydroponics; citric acid; 14C; biodegradation; acid soils; aluminium toxicity; Soil Science; agricultural hydrology; Lantbrukshydrologi; marklära; Plant biochemistry; Växtbiokemi;

    Abstract : Growth conditions on acid soils may be hampered by low nutrient availability and phytotoxic Al (aluminium) concentrations. In this thesis I present my studies on adaptation mechanisms of wild plants to acid soils in the close root environment, the rhizosphere. READ MORE

  2. 2. Physical properties and crystallization of theophylline co-crystals

    Author : Shuo Zhang; Åke Rasmuson; Per Svensson; Mårten Behm; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Theophylline; oxalic acid; glutaric acid; maleic acid; co-crystal; decomposition temperature; melting temperature; solubility; crystallization; Molecular transport processes in chemical process engineering; Molekylära transportprocesser i kemisk processteknik;

    Abstract : This work focuses on the physical properties and crystallization of theophyline co-crystals. Co-crystals of theophylline with oxalic acid, glutaric acid and maleic acid have been investigated. The DSC curves of these co-crystals show that their first endothermic peaks are all lower than the melting temperature of theophylline. READ MORE

  3. 3. Chemical characterization in the biorefinery of lignocellulose : Formation and management of oxalic acid and analysis of feedstocks for bioethanol production

    Author : Anders Sjöde; Nils-Olof Nilvebrant; Leif J. Jönsson; Arthur J. Ragauskas; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; biorefinery; enzymes; ethanol; lignocellulosic feedstocks; oxalic acid; scaling; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The pulp and paper industry is entering a new era. Pulp mills will be transformed to biorefineries that produce not only pulp, but also biofuels and novel products from lignocellulose. This thesis addresses problems connected with the industrial transition to environmental-friendly technologies and the implementation of the biorefinery concept. READ MORE

  4. 4. Metal-Organic Complexes at Surfaces

    Author : Cristina Isvoranu; Synkrotronljusfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; x-ray absorption spectroscopy; x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; bi-isonicotinic acid; oxalic acid; spin change; gas adsorption; metal-organic complex; iron phthalocyanine; scanning tunneling spectroscopy; resonant photoemission spectroscopy;

    Abstract : The adsorption of different metal-organic complexes at surfaces was investigated by spectroscopic techniques (x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy) and by scanning tunnelling microscopy. The investigation methods are able to provide atomic scale information on the studied systems, which moreover originates from the top-most atomic layers in a sample, meaning that they are surface sensitive techniques. 5. 5. Industrial applications and properties of oxalate-degrading enzymes

    Author : Sandra Winestrand; Leif J. Jönsson; Thomas Nilsson; Nils-Olof Nilvebrant; Gudmundur O. Hreggvidsson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxalic acid; oxalate oxidase; oxalate decarboxylase; calcium oxalate; scaling; active packaging; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Oxalate-degrading enzymes were investigated with focus on potential applications in the pulp and paper industry and in active packaging. Changes introduced to make the pulp and paper industry more environmentally friendly, such as recirculation of process-water streams and elementary chlorine free bleaching of pulp, have led to increasing problems with precipitation of calcium oxalate.
