21. Processing and properties of thermoplastic composites containing cellulose nanocrystals or wood-based cellulose fibres
Abstract : Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were surface modified with dialkylamines to increase the compatibility between the CNC and the polymeric matrix, and promising results were obtained, with a 300 % stiffness increase when the mixed dispersion was compression moulded on a laboratory scale. The manufacturing process was up-scaled using water-assisted mixing in a twin-screw extruder (TSE) followed by a second compounding step and injection moulding (IM). READ MORE

22. Protein disulfide isomerase : function and mechanism in oxidative protein folding
Abstract : The formation of native intramolecular disulfide bonds is critical for the folding and stability of many secreted proteins. This process involves oxidation of protein thiols to form disulfide bonds as well as rearrangement of any non-native disulfide bonds that might form. READ MORE

23. A Spectroscopic Study of Interfacial Films: Internal Structuring, Stability, and Hydration
Abstract : Monolayers of molecules are capable of completely changing the nature of surfaces and their interactions with the surroundings despite their almost negligible thickness. In the research presented in this doctoral thesis the surface specific technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS) was combined with the Langmuir trough to investigate various manifestations of monolayers, such as biomimetic membranes, mono methyl branched long chain fatty acids in contact with air, and hydrophobic silane monolayers in contact with water. 24. Polyethylene – metal oxide particle nanocomposites for future HVDC cable insulation : From interface tailoring to designed performance
Abstract : Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) nanocomposites containing metal oxide nanoparticles are considered as promising candidates for insulating materials in future high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cables. The significant improvement in dielectric properties compared with unfilled polymer is attributed to the large and active interface between the nanoparticles and the polymer. READ MORE

25. Neurotoxicity of methylmercury : analysis of molecular mechanisms and behavioral alterations
Abstract : MethyImercury (MeHg) is a global pollutant that is toxic for the nervous system, especially during development. Contaminated fish is the main route of human exposure. Recent studies have indicated that neurological alterations in humans may occur even after exposure to fairly low levels of MeHg. READ MORE
