  1. 1. Machinability of Single-phase Materials : Surface integrity and tool wear analysis

    Author : Mike Olsson; Industriell Produktion; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Machinability; Niobium; Tungsten; Oxygen-free copper; Surface integrity; Tool wear;

    Abstract : The quality and performance of products are particularly important in sectors such as research facilities and in the nuclear, military and space industries. These sectors make use of high-performance materials that are uncommon in other contexts and therefore place high requirements on personnel, machines and tools. READ MORE

    Abstract : The chemical bond – a corner stone in science and a prerequisite for life – is the focus of this thesis. Fundamental and applied aspects of chemical bonding are covered including the development of new computational methods for the characterization and rationalization of chemical interactions. 3. 3. Mechanical Properties of Welds at Creep Activation Temperatures

    Author : Henrik C.M. Andersson-Östling; Rolf Sandström; Kamran Nikbin; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; creep; creep crack propagation; OFHC copper; welds; nuclear waste disposal; creep modeling; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : Welds in materials intended for service at temperatures above the creep activation temperature often develop damage before the base metal. The weld is a discontinuity in the material and stresses and strains often accumulate in the weld. Knowledge of the properties of the weld is essential to the safe operation of the component containing the weld. READ MORE

  4. 4. Redox Reactions in Li-ion Battery Cycling and in Cu Corrosion Studied by Soft X-ray Spectroscopy

    Author : Håkan Hollmark; Laurent Duda; Thorsten Schmitt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : The topic of this thesis is redox reactions in two technologically important contexts: firstly, in Li-ion battery electrodes during cycling, and secondly, in copper corrosion in oxygen-free ground water containing sulfide. In an attempt to expand the understanding of the charge uptake process in battery electrodes and the chemical reactions on copper surfaces upon sulfide exposure, soft X-ray spectroscopy has been used to study the electronic structure of these systems. 5. 5. Protein Engineering of Extracellular Superoxide Dismutase : Characterization of Binding to Heparin and Cellular Surfaces

    Author : Ing-Marie Ahl; Lena Tibell; Bengt-Harald Jonsson; Steen Vang Petersen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Accumulating evidence indicates that oxygen free radicals are involved in many diseases and pathological conditions, such as aging, inflammation, reperfusion damage of ischemic tissue and various cardiovascular diseases. Extracellular superoxide dismutase (ECSOD) thus plays a major role in the maintenance of cells by providing protection against these toxic substances in the extracellular space. READ MORE
