  1. 1. Biomass in a Sustainable Energy System

    Author : Pål Börjesson; Miljö- och energisystem; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kontroll av utsläpp; Miljöteknik; pollution control; Environmental technology; economic valuation; environmental impact; carbon dioxide; Biomass; energy efficiency; Energiforskning; Energy research;

    Abstract : The increased use of biomass for energy is as a key strategy in reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, which represents the largest anthropogenic contribution to the greenhouse effect. In this thesis, aspects of an increase in the utilisation of biomass in the Swedish energy system are treated. READ MORE

  2. 2. The transition to a bio-based economy : Toward an integrated understanding

    Author : Therese Bennich; Salim Belyazid; Pål Börjesson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bio-based economy; bio-economy; sustainability transitions; 2030 Agenda; Sustainable Development Goals; integrated sustainability assessment; systems analysis; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : The bio-based economy has gained increasing attention in societal and academic debates over the past two decades, and is argued to hold solutions to several pressing sustainability challenges. However, it is not yet clear if the high-reaching aspirations of the bio-based economy can be realized. READ MORE

  3. 3. Added value from biomass by broader utilization of fuels and CHP plants

    Author : Christer Gustavsson; Roger Renström; Lars Nilsson; Pål Börjesson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biofuels; bioeconomy; pyrolysis; gasification; leaching; Miljö- och energisystem; Environmental and Energy Systems;

    Abstract : The present work, where additional value-creating processes in existing combined heat and power (CHP) structures have been examined, is motivated by a political- and consumer-driven strive towards a bioeconomy and a stagnation for the existing business models in large parts of the CHP sector.The research is based on cases where the integration of flash pyrolysis for co-production of bio-oil, co-gasification for production of fuel gas and synthetic biofuels as well as leaching of extractable fuel components in existing CHP plants have been simulated. 4. 4. Development of an optimization model for the location of biofuel production plants

    Author : Sylvain Leduc; Pål Börjesson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Energy Engineering; Energiteknik;

    Abstract : First generation biofuels have not achieved the expected greenhouse gas emission savings and the production may in some cases compete with food production. Issued from non arable land and certified wood, the production of the second generation biofuels are more adapted to tackle those issues. READ MORE

  5. 5. Global Phosphorus supply chain dynamics: Sustainability implications for the 21st century

    Author : Claudiu Eduard Nedelciu; Ingrid Stjernquist; Kristin Vala Ragnarsdottir; Birgit Kopainski; Pål Börjesson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phosphorus; supply chain; food security; circularity; systems thinking; system dynamics modeling; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Phosphorus is an essential yet irreplaceable macronutrient for agriculture and thus plays a key role in global food security. Most of the phosphate fertilizers are produced from phosphate rock, a finite mineral resource that is mined and processed at great environmental and social costs. READ MORE
