  1. 1. Environmental pollutants and the reproductive system in birds : Developmental effects of estrogenic compounds

    Author : Cecilia Berg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Avian embryo; test system; xeno-estrogen; endocrine disruption; reproductive organ differentiation; oviduct; testis; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Ecotoxicology; ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : A number of environmental pollutants have been shown to mimick the action of the female sex hormone estrogen and are, therefore, suspected to be responsible for reproductive abnormalities seen in wildlife. Test systems which can be used in hazard and risk assessment of chemicals with estrogenic effects are consequently needed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Effects of unloading on skeletal muscle mass and function in man

    Author : Hans Berg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Atrophy; bedrest; concentric and isometric and eccentric muscle actions; disuse; electromyography; fatigue; fiber types and size; humans; inactivity; maximal voluntary force; recovery; skeletal muscle cross-sectional area; strength; suspension; tomog;

    Abstract : An experimental human model of skeletal muscle unloading of one lower limb and confined bedrest wereemployed to quantitate the adaptive responses to 10 days, 4 or 6 wk of unloading in healthy humans onquadricep skeletal muscle mass and function. Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) was assessed using tomographic imaging (CT, MRI). READ MORE

  3. 3. Regulation of transcription factors by XAP-2, a member of the Hsp90 chaperone complex

    Author : Petra Berg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : p>The AhR belongs to the bHLH/PAS family of transcription factors, which mediates biological effects of environmental pollutants such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-rho-dioxin (TCDD). In the absence of ligand the AhR is located in the cytoplasmatic compartment of the cell associated with the molecular chaperone Hsp90, p23 and a member of the immunophilin family of proteins, XAP-2. Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effect of prednisolone and valaciclovir in a large number of Bell's palsy patients. The incidence and intensity of pain around the ear, in the face or in the neck during the first two months of palsy, and its prognostic value, was also assessed. READ MORE

  5. 5. Postoperative recovery in daysurgery : Evaluation of psychometric properties and clinical usefulness of a questionnaire in day surgery

    Author : Katarina Berg; Mitra Unosson; Ewa Idvall; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Background: Day surgery has increased during recent decades in many countries and represents approximately 50% of surgical procedures performed in Sweden. Day surgery implies that the patient is admitted and operated on during the same day and discharged without an overnight stay at the surgery unit. READ MORE
