  1. 1. Drivers of carbon sink function in tropical seagrass beds : influence of carbon import, plant composition, seascape configuration and human activities

    Author : Rashid O. Ismail; Mats Björk; Martin Gullström; Maria E. Asplund; Amelia S. Buriyo; Matern S.P. Mtolera; Teresa Alcoverro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Carbon sequestration; tropical seagrass meadows; coastal seascape; landscape configuration and transformation; calcification; allochthonous carbon; community respiration; carbon sink; human disturbance; coastal conservation; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Seagrass meadows are effective carbon sinks, sequestering atmospheric CO2 and capturing allochthonous organic material, storing organic carbon (Corg) in their sediments, so called Blue Carbon. In tropical areas, seagrass meadows have a high number of calcareous organisms, which can offset carbon sequestration by releasing CO2 through their calcification. READ MORE

  2. 2. Seawater pH as a Controlling Factor in Macroalgal Calcification and Photosynthesis

    Author : Immaculate Sware Semesi; Mats Björk; Sven Beer; O. P. Rui Santos; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Calcareous macroalgae; CO2; mussels; pH; seagrasses; tropical lagoons; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Biological calcification and photosynthesis are important processes with a great influence on both structure and function of oceanic ecosystems. The pH of the seawater has a strong influence on both these processes and therefore the impacts of different pH levels on calcareous macroalgae were investigated in laboratory and field experiments at Chwaka and Fumba Bays in Zanzibar, Tanzania. 3. 3. Congenital Heart Disease, Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

    Author : Anna Björk; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Congenital Heart Disease; Diabetes Mellitus; Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus; Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus; Mortality; Morbidity;

    Abstract : Worldwide, 1% of all live born children are born with a congenital heart disease (CHD) and currently >95% reach adulthood due to better diagnostics and medical care. At the same time, Diabetes Mellitus (DM), type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 (T2DM), is increasing worldwide. READ MORE

  4. 4. Absorbed Dose Determination and Characteristics of Degraded Electron Beams: Application to Intraoperative Radiation Therapy

    Author : Peter Björk; Internmedicin - epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Clinical physics; radiology; tomography; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; absorbed dose distribution; output factor; stopping-power ratio; beam characteristics; Monte Carlo calculation; electron beam dosimetry; applicator system; radiation therapy; linear accelerator; intraoperative radiotherapy;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to quantify limitations of and uncertainties in commonly used dosimetric techniques for relative absorbed dose determination in degraded electron beams, such as those encountered in intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) and small-electron-field radiotherapy. Three different detector types were investigated with regard to measurements of output factors and relative absorbed dose distributions: (1) a parallel-plate ionization chamber, (2) a p-type silicon diode detector and (3) a diamond detector. 5. 5. Genetic, environmental and life-style effects on androgen receptor function

    Author : Christel Björk; Malmö Molekylärgenetisk reproduktionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reproductive function; smoking; 4 .4-DDE; persistent organic pollutants; prostate cancer; Androgen receptor; prostate specific antigen; CAG polymorphism; TCDD; aryl hydrocarbon receptor; CB-153;

    Abstract : Androgens regulate male reproductive function and their effects are mediated through the androgen receptor (AR). The AR gene contains a polymorphic CAG repeat, encoding a stretch of glutamines, affecting the transcriptional activity of the AR. READ MORE
