  1. 11. Cardiovascular risk factors, brain structure, and cognitive decline in old age : a population-based study

    Author : Rui Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cardiovascular risk factors;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis investigated the burden of cardiovascular risk factors among older adults (age ≥60 years) living in central Stockholm (Study I) and the associations of these risk factors with structural brain characteristics and cognitive decline in aging, taking genetic background (APOE gene) into account (Studies II, III, and IV). All studies in this thesis use data from the Swedish National study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K) and the embedded SNAC-K Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) study. READ MORE

  2. 12. Fighting isoaspartate

    Author : Jijing Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Isoaspartate (IsoAsp) is a damaging amino acid residue generated either from asparagine (Asn) deamidation or aspartate (Asp) isomerization. Both reactions are spontaneous in physiological conditions and require no enzymes. In isoAsp, a CH2 group is rearranged from the side chain and extends the polypeptide backbone. READ MORE

  3. 13. The genomic signatures of adaptive evolution in Populus

    Author : Jing Wang; Pär Ingvarsson; Barbara Mable; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Populus; adaptive evolution; natural selection; genomic diversity and divergence; recombination; Next-generation sequencing; local adaptation;

    Abstract : Understanding the genetic basis of adaptive evolution, and how natural selection has shaped patterns of polymorphism and divergence within and between species are enduring goals of evolutionary genetics. In this thesis, I used whole genome re-sequencing data to characterize the genomic signatures of natural selection along different evolutionary timescales in three Populus species: Populus tremula, P. 4. 14. Carbohydrate Levels and Fructan Metabolism in Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Leaves : effects of manipulating mineral nutrition and photosynthesis

    Author : Changwen Wang; Björn Thorsteinsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fysiologisk botanik; Physiological Botany;

    Abstract : Carbohydrate levels and fructan metabolism were studied in the leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Agneta) plants subjected to phosphorous (P)-deficiency, nitrogen (N)-deficiency and N-resupply following the N-deficiency. READ MORE

  5. 15. Apoptosis-related mechanisms in the immature brain after hypoxia-ischemia

    Author : Xiaoyang Wang; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; caspase; ERK; XIAP; EPO; asialoEPO; brain;

    Abstract : Aims: To characterize the activation of caspases-3 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in the neonatal brain after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) injury and evaluate the neuroprotective effect of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) protein, erythropoietin (EPO) and the non-erythropoietic derivative asialoEPO. Methods: Seven-day-old rats or 9-day-old mice were subjected to HI. READ MORE
