  1. 16. Monitoring the cellular phosphate status in bloom-forming cyanobacteria of the Baltic Sea

    Author : Sara Jonasson; Erik Söderbäck; Hans C. P. Matthjis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; phosphorus; cyanotoxin; nodularin; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : In the Baltic Sea dense cyanobacterial blooms occur regularly during late summer. Since the dominant bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Nodularia spp. and Apanizomenon spp. are capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen, the macronutrient predominantly limiting their growth is phosphorus. 2. 17. Experimental study of turbulent flows through pipe bends

    Author : Athanasia Kalpakli; P. Henrik Alfredsson; Ramis Örlü; Christoph Brücker; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Turbulent flow; swirl; pulsation; pipe bend; hot-wire anemometry; cold-wire anemometry; laser Doppler velocimetry; stereoscopic particle image velocimetry.;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with turbulent flows in 90 degree curved pipes of circular cross-section. The flow cases investigated experimentally are turbulent flow with and without an additional motion, swirling or pulsating, superposed on the primary flow. READ MORE

  3. 18. Seawater pH as a Controlling Factor in Macroalgal Calcification and Photosynthesis

    Author : Immaculate Sware Semesi; Mats Björk; Sven Beer; O. P. Rui Santos; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Calcareous macroalgae; CO2; mussels; pH; seagrasses; tropical lagoons; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Biological calcification and photosynthesis are important processes with a great influence on both structure and function of oceanic ecosystems. The pH of the seawater has a strong influence on both these processes and therefore the impacts of different pH levels on calcareous macroalgae were investigated in laboratory and field experiments at Chwaka and Fumba Bays in Zanzibar, Tanzania. 4. 19. Sparse representation of visual data for compression and compressed sensing

    Author : Ehsan Miandji; Jonas Unger; Anders Ynnerman; Hendrik P. A. Lensch; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The ongoing advances in computational photography have introduced a range of new imaging techniques for capturing multidimensional visual data such as light fields, BRDFs, BTFs, and more. A key challenge inherent to such imaging techniques is the large amount of high dimensional visual data that is produced, often requiring GBs, or even TBs, of storage. READ MORE

  5. 20. Melanophores : cell biophysics and sensor applications

    Author : Martin Testorf; P. Åke Öberg; Ingemar Lundström; Philip McFadden; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with studies of melanophores and melanosomes by means of a physical approach. Melanophores are pigment cells that give the black colour to many vertebrates, e.g. fishes, frogs, and reptiles. READ MORE
