  1. 11. Experimental studies in jet flows and zero pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers

    Author : Ramis Örlü; P. Henrik Alfredsson; Tim B. Nickels; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Axisymmetric jet; swirling jet; coaxial jet; heated jet; zero pressuregradient turbulent boundary layer; wall-bounded turbulent flows; overlap region; passive scalar mixing; hot-wire anemometry; spatial resolution.; Fluid mechanics; Strömningsmekanik;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the description and development of two classical turbulent shear flows, namely free jet and flat plate turbulent boundary layer flows. In both cases new experimental data has been obtained and in the latter case comparisons are also made with data obtained from data bases, both of experimental and numerical origin. READ MORE

  2. 12. Light’EM up! : structural characterization of light-driven membrane protein complexes by cryogenic electron microscopy

    Author : André Tomás Graça; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Johannes Messinger; Karina Persson; Werner Kühlbrandt; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 3D reconstruction; Arabidopsis thaliana; assembly; chlorophyll; cryo-EM; cyanobacteria; Deinococus radiodurans; electron; land plants; membrane protein complexes; Photosystem II; proton; single-particle analysis; S-Layer Deinoxanthin Binding Complex SDBC ; water.; Biochemistry; biokemi; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Abstract : Photosynthesis is probably the most important process for allowing life to develop into the diverse forms we see today. In this process, solar radiation is used to convert CO2 into biomass. From this process, we obtain oxygen to breathe, sources of food (plant biomass), and the potential for clean and sustainable energy. READ MORE

  3. 13. Study of GaN Based Nanostructures and Hybrids

    Author : Mathias Forsberg; Galia Pozina; Ching-Lien Hsiao; Kevin P. O'Donnell; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Sputtering; Forster; Semiconductor; Nitride; GaN; Hybrid; Nanorods; Nanostructure; Thin film; Förstoffning; Sputtring; Förster; Halvledare; Nitrid; GaN; Hybrider; Nanostavar; Nanostrukturer; tunnfilmer;

    Abstract : GaN and its alloys with Al and In belong to the group III nitride semiconductors and are today the materials of choice for efficient white light emitting diodes (LEDs) enabling energy saving solid state lighting. Currently, there is a great interest in the development of novel inexpensive techniques to fabricate hybrid LEDs combining high quality III-N quantum well (QW) structures with inexpensive colloidal nanoparticles or conjugated polymers. 4. 14. Nanopolysaccharide coatings for functional surfaces in water-treatment materials : From mechanisms to process scalability

    Author : Andrea Aguilar Sánchez; Aji P. Mathew; Albert Mihranyan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nanopolysaccharides; coating; water treatment; nanocellulose; nanochitin; antifouling; antibacterial; separation technologies; materialkemi; Materials Chemistry;

    Abstract : In this thesis, materials from renewable resources were used to develop functionalized surfaces for water treatment. The work is thus inspired by, and contributes to, the United Nations sustainable goals of: (i) clean water and sanitation, (ii) climate action, (iii) responsible consumption and production, (iv) life below water, and (v) partnerships for the goals. 5. 15. DNA Tools and Microfluidic Systems for Molecular Analysis

    Author : Jonas Jarvius; Ulf Landegren; Mats Nilsson; P Luke Lee; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Molecular medicine; Proximity ligation; Microfluidics; Single molecule detection; Microarray; Bonding; Molekylärmedicin;

    Abstract : Improved methods are needed to interrogate the genome and the proteome. Methods with high selectivity, wide dynamic range, and excellent precision, capable of simultaneously analyzing many biomolecules are required to decipher cellular function. This thesis describes a molecular and microfluidic toolbox designed with those criteria in mind. READ MORE
