  1. 16. The Enteric Nervous System, Plasticity and Survival

    Author : Katarina Sandgren; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; Nitric oxide synthase; Neuropeptides; Neuronal survival; Lethal spotted mice; Interstitial cells of Cajal; Hirschsprung s disease; Cell cultures; Enteric nervous system; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : The thesis deals with plasticity in terms of neurotransmitter expression and survival of neurons in the adult enteric nervous system (ENS). Several motility disorders have been suggested to originate in developmental defects, neurodegeneration, or insufficient innervation by the ENS. READ MORE

  2. 17. Intestinal Bypass and Total Parenteral Nutrition: Changes in Gut Function and Morphology

    Author : Mikael Ekelund; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; orthopaedics; Surgery; Gastroenterologi; Gastro-enterology; Fysiologi; Physiology; total parenteral nutrition; supersensitivity; plasticity; intestinal bypass; interstitial cells of Cajal; goblet cells; eosinophils; adaptation; enteric nervous system;

    Abstract : Abolition of enteral nutrition is sometimes required in severe illness. The primary aim of the present work has been to elucidate possible changes in intestinal morphology and motor function in absence of enteral nutrition. Total absence of enteral nutrition in an isolated intestinal segment was created by bypassing the distal ileum in a rat model. READ MORE

  3. 18. Physiological and pathophysiological regulation of ECL-cell activity

    Author : Maria Lundgren; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pharmacy; toxicology; Pharmacological sciences; pharmacognosy; Gastroenterologi; endothelin; gastrin; ischemia-reperfusion; Physiology; Fysiologi; Gastro-enterology; pancreastatin; histamine; microdialysis; ECL-cell; stomach; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi;

    Abstract : The ECL cells are endocrine/paracrine cells located in the acid-producing part of the stomach. They produce and secrete histamine and chromogranin A-derived peptides in response to circulating gastrin. Mobilized histamine stimulates acid secretion from adjascent parietal cells. READ MORE

  4. 19. Neurohormonal Modulators in the Parathyroid Gland. Localization and regulation

    Author : Lena Luts; Malmö Patologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Receptor; In situ hybridization; Immunocytochemistry; Nitric Oxide Synthase; Endothelin; Neuropeptides; Chromogranin; Parathyroid adenoma; Parathyroid gland; Parathyroid hormone; mRNA; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : The occurrence and distribution of neurohormonal peptides, neuroendocrine markers and receptors in parathyroid nerve fibers and endocrine cells are described, using immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridization, image analysis and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Immunocytochemical studies revealed that parathyroid glands of chicken, rat, guinea-pig, cat, dog and sheep contained adrenergic-, cholinergic-, and peptide-containing nerve fibers. READ MORE

  5. 20. Development of therapeutics for the treatment of diabetic brain complications

    Author : Shiva Mansouri; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Type-2 diabetes (T2D) is characterized by hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia, resulting in impaired insulin production and insulin resistance in peripheral tissues. Several studies have demonstrated an association between diabetes and central nervous system complications such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. READ MORE
