  1. 1. Mixed Block Copolymer Solutions: Self-Assembly and Interactions

    Author : Solmaz Bayati; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polymer; Block Copolymer; PEO-PPO-PEO; Pluronics©; Bile Salt; NaGDC; PNIPAAM; PAMPTMA; PAMPS; Mixed Micelle; Self-Assembly; Mixed Complexes;

    Abstract : This thesis incorporates studies on the aqueous systems of two types of thermoresponsive amphiphilic block copolymers; a series of nonionic triblock copolymers comprising blocks of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) denoted as PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers, and a series of ionic diblock copolymers consisting of one charged block and one block of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM). Various techniques, such as dynamic and static light scattering (DLS and SLS), small angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS), high sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry (HSDSC), turbidimetry, electrophoretic mobility measurements, and two-dimensional proton NMR nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (2D 1H NMR NOESY), were applied to study these block copolymer systems. 2. 2. Immunosuppressive Myeloid Cells in Breast Cancer and Sepsis

    Author : Caroline Bergenfelz; Institutionen för translationell medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Immune cells play paradoxical roles in cancer progression. On one hand, the immune system protects us against tumor development by recognizing and eliminating cancerous cells. READ MORE

  3. 3. Relish and the Regulation of Antimicrobial Peptides in Drosophila melanogaster

    Author : Marika Hedengren Olcott; Barbara Taylor; Jean-Marc Reichhart; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Drosophila immunity; NF-kappaB; Relish; antimicrobial peptides; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi;

    Abstract : The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has been a powerful model system in which to study the immune response. When microorganisms breach the mechanical barrier of the insect, phagocytosing cells and a battery of induced antimicrobial molecules rapidly attack them. These antimicrobial peptides can reach micromolar concentrations within a few hours. READ MORE

  4. 4. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and inflammatory bone modeling

    Author : Ali Kassem; Ulf Lerner; Pernilla Lundberg; Pedro Souza; Timothy Arnett; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toll-like receptor; osteoclast; osteoblast; bone resorption; bone formation; P. gingivalis; S. aureus; flagellin.;

    Abstract : Patients with inflammatory or infectious conditions such as periodontitis, peri-implantitis, osteomyelitis, rheumatoid arthritis, septic arthritis and loosened joint prosthesis display varying severity of destruction in the adjacent bone tissue. Bone loss in inflammatory diseases is considered a consequence of cytokine induced RANKL and subsequent enhanced osteoclast formation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies towards late blight control in potato

    Author : Laith Moushib; Molekylär cellbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oomycetes; plant induced resistance; sustainable agriculture; plant defence activators; plant innate immunity; potato; late blight;

    Abstract : Abstract The oomycete Phytophthora infestans, which causes the devastating late blight disease of potato, is notorious for developing resistance to conventional control strategies (fungicide application and resistance breeding by introgression of R gene). To increase our tool box of disease management strategies available to combat P. READ MORE
