1. Post-translational modifications in DNA base excision repair : The roles of CK2 and PARP-1
Abstract : Base lesions and DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs) are very common types of DNA damage. The base excision repair (BER) and single-strand break repair (SSBR) machineries both require a succession of enzymatic events in order to remove these types of endogenous lesions and to restore the DNA. 2. Mechanisms of leukemia-induced immunosuppression
Abstract : This thesis aimed to define the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced by the NADPH oxidase of myeloid cells, in the regulation of lymphocyte function with focus on ROS-induced dysfunction of natural killer (NK) cells and T lymphocytes in myeloid leukemia. In Paper I, a novel mechanism is presented by which specifically activated T lymphocytes evade inactivation by ROS after antigen presentation. READ MORE

3. Tolerance and injury mechanisms in the developing CNS
Abstract : The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury has been the subject of extensive research yet a neuroprotective strategy to limit its progression is lacking.OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present thesis was to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in neonatal HI, specifically to study I) the involvement of Poly ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 in HI, II) the effect of hypoxic PC on brain injury and function after HI in the long-term perspective, III) the effect of hypoxic PC on global gene expression, in particular the involvement of apoptosis related genes, and IV) the vascular response to hypoxic PC. 4. Regulation of TGF-β Signaling by Post-Translational Modifications
Abstract : Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling is initiated when the ligand binds to type II and type I serine/threonine kinase receptors at the cell surface. Activated TGF-β type I receptors phosphorylate R-Smads which relocate, together with co-Smads, to the cell nucleus and regulate transcription. READ MORE

5. Induction and repair of DNA double-strand breaks in human cells exposed to different radiation qualities
Abstract : Radiation therapy is used in attempting to kill tumor cells by inducing DNA double- strand breaks (DSB), the most critical DNA lesions. Recent and planned radiation therapy strategies use high-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation to effectively treat malignant tumors. READ MORE
