  1. 11. p53-dependent and -independent mechanisms of p53-targeting small molecules

    Author : Jiawei Zhu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Tumor suppressor p53 (Tp53) is mutated in around half of human cancers, while in wild type p53 cells its activity is continuously inhibited by MDM2 through proteasome degradation resulting in the loss of its function. Currently, cancer treatments with small molecules based on reactivation of wild type p53 and restoration of mutant p53 have moved to clinical trials and exhibited promising anti-cancer effects. 2. 12. 5-Fluorouracil mediated cell death signaling
 in colon carcinoma cells

    Author : Birce Akpinar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common form of cancer in the world. 5- Fluorouracil (5-FU) belongs to the fluoropyrimidine-type of drugs and is commonly used in the treatment of several solid tumors. It has become the mainstay of CRC treatment at stage III and high risk stage II, either alone or in combination with other drugs. READ MORE

  3. 13. Molecular mechanisms of inflammation and calcification in aortic valve stenosis

    Author : Edit Nagy; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Aortic valve stenosis is a slowly progressive disorder with a spectrum of disease ranging from aortic sclerosis to severe destroyed valvular architecture leading to critical outflow obstruction. The diseased valve is characterized by inflammation, as an initiating event, pathological remodeling of extracellular matrix and pronounced calcification, which all eventually cause restricted leaflet mobility. 4. 14. Study of the mechanisms behind the additive effect of neoadjuvant castration on radiotherapy for prostate cancer

    Author : Firas L Tarish; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Castration improves responses to radiotherapy (RT) in prostate cancer with unknown mechanism. An understanding of what happens at the cellular and molecular level in prostate cancer cells, while reducing their access to androgens and then exposing them to ionizing radiation (IR), would give us an opportunity to optimize the treatment and may also inspire novel therapeutic approaches. 5. 15. Retinal tumorigenesis and neurodegeneration : strategies to promote tumor cell death and support retinal cell survival to preserve vision

    Author : Tanzina Mollick; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Our vision is central to our quality of life enabling us to interact with our environment and lead productive lives. The ability to see begins in the retina, one of the paramount features of the eye, as it takes on the task of converting light signals to nerve impulses that are relayed to the visual centers of the brain.
