  1. 6. Oxidant-induced cell death in lymphocytes: mechanisms of induction and resistance

    Author : Fredrik Bergh Thorén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : reactive oxygen species; cell death; apoptosis; poly ADP-ribose polymerase-1; apoptosis-inducing factor; natural killer cells; phagocytes; dendritic cells;

    Abstract : Reactive oxygen species (oxidants, oxygen radicals) produced by the phagocytic NADPH oxidase have pivotal roles in immunity. Patients lacking a functional NADPH oxidase suffer from chronic granulomatous disease, which is characterized by recurring bacterial infections and thus manifesting the importance of reactive oxygen species in host defense against bacteria. 2. 7. Mechanisms for Quantitative Regulation of TGF-ß Signaling

    Author : Markus Dahl; Aristidis Moustakas; Carl-Henrik Heldin; Daniel Constam; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär cellbiologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Cancer is a widely spread disease, and many cancer variants are today still difficult to treat. Efforts are being made to understand the complexity of cancer, both at a clinical level but also at a pre-clinical level. READ MORE

  3. 8. On the role of innate cell interactions in inflammation and leukemia

    Author : Rebecca E Riise; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Innate immunity; neutrophils; NK cells; caspase-1; apoptosis; myeloid leukemia; ROS; immunotherapy;

    Abstract : Inflammatory cells of the innate immune system launch rapid and powerful effector responses in the combat against infectious pathogens. However, these inflammatory mediators may cause excessive damage to the host and, therefore, require rigid control systems to maintain the delicate balance between prompt clearance of infections and the risk of developing immunopathology. 4. 9. Cellular Pharmacology of the Novel Antitumoural Cyanoguanidine CHS 828

    Author : Henrik Lövborg; Rolf Larsson; Peter Nygren; Klas Wiman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacology; CHS 828; Cyanoguanidines; Oncology; Pharmacology; Farmakologi; Pharmacological research; Farmakologisk forskning;

    Abstract : The antitumoural cyanoguanidine CHS 828 has shown promising activity in a number of preclinical and clinical studies. However, the mechanisms underlying the cell death induced by CHS 828 has not been clarified. This thesis describes in vitro studies of the cellular pharmacology of CHS 828. READ MORE

  5. 10. Role of Non-Homologous End-Joining in Repair of Radiation-Induced DNA Double-Strand Breaks

    Author : Karin Karlsson; Bo Stenerlöw; Jörgen Carlsson; Thomas Helleday; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Molecular biology; DNA damage; DNA repair; DSB; NHEJ; DNA-PK; ionising radiation; high-LET; heat-labile sites; PFGE; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Efficient and correct repair of DNA damage, especially DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), is vital for the survival of individual cells and organisms. Defects in the DNA repair may lead to cell death or genomic instability and development of cancer. READ MORE
