  1. 1. Fluoride in surface water and groundwater in southeast Sweden : sources, controls and risk aspects

    Author : Tobias Berger; Mats E. Åström; Pasi Peltola; Henrik Drake; Olle Selinus; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fluorine; fluoride; water-rock interaction; granite; crystalline bedrock; surface water; groundwater; Götemar; drinking water quality; aluminium; speciation; fluorosis; PBA; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to determine the sources, controls and risk aspects of fluoride in surface water and groundwater in a region of southeastern Sweden where the fluorine-rich 1.45 Ga circular Götemar granite (5 km in diameter) crops out in the surrounding 1.8 Ga granites and quartz monzodiorites (TIB rocks). 2. 2. Disease-causing Keratin Mutations and Cytoskeletal Dysfunction in Human Skin : In vitro Models and new Pharmacologic Strategies for Treating Epidermolytic Genodermatoses

    Author : Jean Christopher Chamcheu; Anders Vahlquist; Hans Törmä; Harshad Navsaria; Marie Virtanen; Torbjörn Egelrud; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; epidermolysis bullosa simplex; epidermolytic ichthyosis; genodermatoses; keratin; keratin mutation; keratinocytes; gene therapy; pharmacological therapy; immortalization; gene regulation; trimethylamine N-oxide TMAO ; sodium 4-phenylbutyrate 4-PBA ; tissue engineering; cell culture; heat shock proteins; MAP kinases; Dermatology and venerology; Dermatologi och venerologi; Dermatologi och venereologi; Dermatology and Venerology;

    Abstract : Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) and epidermolytic ichthyosis (EI) are rare skin fragility diseases characterized by intra-epidermal blistering due to autosomal dominant-negative mutations in basal (KRT5 or KRT14) and suprabasal (KRT1 or KRT10) keratin genes,  respectively. Despite vast knowledge in the disease pathogenesis, the pathomechanisms are not fully understood, and no effective remedies exist. READ MORE

  3. 3. Role of antimicrobial peptides in tuberculosis and respiratory tract infections : clinical and mechanistic studies

    Author : Rokeya Sultana Rekha; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are effector molecules of the innate immune system in multicellular organisms. They are mainly expressed in epithelial cells and immune cells, providing the first line of defense against a wide range of pathogens. READ MORE

  4. 4. Poly (butylene succinate) and poly (butylene adipate) : quantitative determination of degradation products and application as PVC plasticizers

    Author : Annika Lindström; Minna Hakkarainen; Ann-Christine Albertsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; solid phase extraction; degradation products; poly butylene succinate ; poly butylene adipate ; GC-MS; PVC; plasticizer; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : A solid phase extraction (SPE) method was developed for simultaneous extraction of dicarboxylic acids and diols formed during hydrolysis of poly(butylene succinate), PBS, and poly(butylene adipate), PBA. The developed SPE method and subsequent GC-MS analysis were used to extract, identify and quantify low molecular weight products migrating from linear and branched poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) during aging in aqueous media. 5. 5. Functional PVC Additives : Core-Shell Nanoparticle and Renewable Resource Plasticizers

    Author : Bo Yin; Minna Hakkarainen; Mikael Skrifvars; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; PVC; nanocomposite; nanoparticle; core-shell; plasticizer; renewable resources; isosorbide; glucose;

    Abstract : Several functional poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) additives were designed: PVC plasticizers made from renewable resources as alternatives to traditional phthalate plasticizers and core-shell nanoparticle-plasticizers with the aim to design an additive that can improve several mechanical properties simultaneously. Monomeric and oligomeric PVC plasticizers based of isosorbide and glucose were synthesized. READ MORE
