  2. 2. Acupuncture in reproductive medicine. Applications in human assisted reproduction and aspects of clinical and experimental neuroendocrinology

    Author : Elisabet Stener-Victorin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; electro-acupuncture; blood flow impedance; circulation; uterine artery; in-vitro fertilization; oocyte aspiration; polycystic ovary syndrome; experimentally induced PCO; anovulation; gonadotropins; steroids; neuropeptides; b-endorphin; nerve growth factor; corticotropin-releasing factor.;

    Abstract : The use of acupuncture in the area of reproductive medicine is relatively new, and it has been rather poorly investigated in the past. When muscle afferents are stimulated by acupuncture in somatic segments related to the innervation of the ovaries and the uterus, functional changes occur in the neural substrate that may influence reproductive function and result in peripheral, segmental and central effects. 3. 3. Posterior capsule opacification : An experimental study in vitro and in vivo

    Author : Niklas Wallentin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical biosciences; Posterior capsule opacification PCO ; after-cataract; lens epithelial cell; proliferation; aqueous humor AqH ; inflammation; growth factors; basic fibroblast growth factor bFGF ; transforming growth factor-β TGF-β ; extracapsular cataract extraction; corneal incision; rabbit; Farmaceutisk biovetenskap; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : The clinical and economic significance of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) makes it an important public health problem. A better understanding of the pathogenesis in order to reduce/prevent PCO is needed. For this purpose an experimental model in the rabbit was used and further developed in thisthesis. READ MORE

  4. 4. On the necessity of screening and national registration of congenital cataracts

    Author : Gunilla Magnusson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : congenital cataract; glaucoma; intraocular surgery; posterior capsular opacification PCO ; prevalence; visual acuity VA ; visual impairment; screening; newborn examination; blindness prevention; cost-utility analysis; quality- adjusted life year QALY ;

    Abstract : Objectives: The overall aim of this thesis was to contribute to improvements in the management of congenital cataract by defining the most efficient screening procedure, examining the magnitude of the morbidity rate, optimizing the timing of surgery by relating surgical outcome to age at intervention and severity of visual deprivation and furthermore by evaluating costs versus consequences of introducing the most efficient screening procedure found, on a national basis.Methods: Paper I: 72 children born between 1992 and 1998 in the Stockholm County Council region, Västra Götaland and Halland county, Linköping-Motala, Malmö, and Lund, who had surgery for congenital cataract before the age of one year were included in a retrospective study. 5. 5. On posterior capsule opacification

    Author : Karin Sundelin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : posterior capsule opacification; quantification; capsulotomy; benefit; intraocular; lens; optic design; Catquest; Evaluation of Posterior Capsule Opacification;

    Abstract : AimsPosterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataractsurgery. The aim of this study was to increase our knowledge about PCO regardingquantification, treatment effects and how different designs of intraocular lenses(IOLs) influence occurrence. READ MORE
