1. Neural Networks Applications and Electronics Development for Nuclear Fusion Neutron Diagnostics
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of electronic modules for fusion neutron spectroscopy as well as several implementations of artificial neural networks (NN) for neutron diagnostics for the Joint European Torus (JET) experimental reactor in England. The electronics projects include the development of two fast light pulser modules based on Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for the calibration and stability monitoring of two neutron spectrometers (MPRu and TOFOR) at JET. 2. Ion Beam Analysis - Development and Application of Nuclear Reaction Analysis Methods, in particular at a Nuclear Microprobe
Abstract : This thesis treats the development of Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) methods, principally for the analysis of light elements at a nuclear microprobe (NMP). The light elements are in this context defined as those with an atomic number Z of less than approximately 13 (aluminium). The work reported is to a large extent based upon multiparameter methods. 3. Quantitative Electron Microscopy Studies of Metal Nanoparticle Catalysts: Nanostructure, Support Interaction and Ageing Effects
Abstract : Heterogeneous catalysis plays a major role in modern society, for example in chemical production, sustainable energy production and emission control technologies. Metal nanoparticles (NPs) supported on oxide materials are frequent catalytic systems in this field. READ MORE

4. Quantitative studies of changes in microstructure and activity during ageing of supported catalysts
Abstract : Catalytic converters have substantially contributed to the improvement of air quality in populated areas in the last decades by abatement of the emission of hazardous componentssuch as CO, unburned hydrocarbons and NOx. However, due to the exposure to high temperature and different components in the exhaust gas, the performance of the catalysts degrades with time. READ MORE

5. Community-based customer involvement for improving packaged software development
Abstract : Noting the widespread use of virtual communities for interacting with customers, this thesis explores the role of virtual communities for involving distributed customers in packaged software development (psd) and the opportunities and challenges that are associated with this. While the idea of involving customers in software development is not new, it is yet to gain momentum in psd. READ MORE
