  1. 6. Gene expression profiling in autoimmune diseases : a story of ups and downs

    Author : Miranda Houtman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Autoimmune diseases are believed to arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors that affect normal function of immune cells. In this thesis, we studied the functional role of genetic variants, in peripheral blood cells, that relate to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and myositis by gene expression profiling. READ MORE

  2. 7. Genetic studies of non-HLA loci in rheumatoid arthritis : expression and interaction of candidate genes

    Author : Marcus Ronninger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Genetic predisposition is an important contributor in development of human complex diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this thesis work, we present advances for involvement of non-HLA genetic risk factors for RA. READ MORE

  3. 8. Redox regulation of T cells in autoimmunity

    Author : Jaime Rose James; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Autoimmune disorders affect a significant part of the population and therefore present a serious health and economic burden. One of the most common autoimmune diseases is rheumatoid arthritis (RA), affecting 0.5-1% of the population which is mediated by both genetic and environmental risk factors. READ MORE

  4. 9. Exploring the Grey Zone between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

    Author : Ekaterine Bakhtadze; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : T1D is most common in children and young adults and is characterized by autoimmune destruction of insulin producing pancreatic beta cells, presence of certain risk genotypes such as HLA-DQB1, INS VNTR, PTPN22 and need of insulin for survival. In adults the same situation is often referred to as Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), with age at onset after 35 years and non-insulin requiring at least for 6 month after diagnosis. 5. 10. Antibody-associated inflammation in and outside the joint in rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Vijay Joshua; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by pain, chronic inflammation and joint destruction. Epidemiological investigations in large populationbased cohorts have identified both genetic (such as HLA-DRB1 Shared epitope, SE) and environmental (such as smoking) risk factors for the development of RA.
