1. Pancreatic carcinoma in Malmö, Sweden: Clinical, epidemiological and biochemical aspects
Abstract : The objective of this thesis has been to assess whether there are indications suggesting that new methods for diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic carcinoma (PCa) has been followed by an improved prognosis, and to assess the possible role of smoking and gastric resection in the causation of the disease. Of the 1,200 new cases PCa diagnosed in Sweden yearly, the majority are older than 70 years, the case fatality rate being close to 100%. READ MORE

2. Molecular Characterization of Genomic Amplifications in Pancreatic Cancer
Abstract : Pancreatic cancer includes multiple histologic subtypes that show large differences in their clinical and biological characteristics. Despite this diversity, more than 85% of the neoplasms in the organ are malignant ductal adenocarcinomas, which are the focus of the present thesis. READ MORE

3. Assessment of diagnostic and prognostic factors in pancreatic duct carcinoma
Abstract : The diagnosis pancreatic carcinoma is suggested by a combination of clinical and radiological signs. The differential diagnosis vs. chronic pancreatitis may, however, be difficult. Morphological verification of malignancy is therefore necessary before initiating non-surgical therapy. READ MORE

4. Issues relevant to the endoscopic and surgical management of pancreatic carcinoma
Abstract : Background: A substantial proportion of the patients with pancreatic cancer require palliative decompression of the extrahepatic bile duct obstruction by endoscopic stent insertion. Only 20% of patients with pancreatic cancer are suitable for resection, which is considered to be a high-risk procedure with postoperative pancreatic fistula (PF) formation in a central role. 5. Molecular studies of pancreatic cancer: Characterization of the transforming growth factor beta signaling pathway
Abstract : In the present thesis, genetic abnormalities in pancreatic cancer were studied, with special emphasis on alterations of components involved in the transforming growth factor beta (TGFB) signaling pathway. In the first study, fluorescence in situ hybridization and cytogenetic analyses revealed aberrations of chromosome 18 in all 13 pancreatic carcinoma cell lines studied, in particular frequent breaks close to the centromere of chromosome arm 18q.
