  1. 1. Stromal components and micro-RNAs as biomarkers in pancreatic cancer

    Author : Oskar Franklin; Malin Sund; Daniel Öhlund; Ola Billing; Marco Del Chiaro; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pancreatic cancer; stroma; basement membrane; tumour markers; type IV collagen; endostatin; osteopontin; tenascin c; hyaluronan; CD44; micro-RNA; kirurgi; Surgery;

    Abstract : Background Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients have the poorest 5-year survival rates of all cancer forms. It is difficult to diagnose at early disease stages, tumour relapse after surgery is common, and current chemotherapies are ineffective. READ MORE

  2. 2. Epidemiology and etiology of pancreatic cancer

    Author : Jiaqi Huang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Pancreatic cancer is one of the most devastating malignancies with an extremely high fatality, resulting that its mortality rate almost equals to incidence rate. Although primary prevention is of upmost importance, the underlying etiology of this cancer remains largely unknown. READ MORE

  3. 3. Neogenesis and alloxan toxicity in pancreatic islets, with special reference to the transplanted human β-cell

    Author : Björn Tyrberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Alloxan; β-cell; diabetes; differentiation; growth; insulin secretion; nephrectomy; ob ob; pancreatic islet; transplantation; guinea-pig human; mouse; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to study whether adult human pancreatic β-cells have the capacity to proliferate in culture and after transplantation to the renal subcapsular space of mice. An immunosuppressive regimen for human islet discordant xenotransplantation to mice was designed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Gallbladder and pancreatic disease in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis

    Author : Karouk Said; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cholecystitis; gallbladder; ejection fraction; magnetic resonance imaging; pancreatic duct; chronic pancreatitis; thioredoxin; Immunohistochemical staining;

    Abstract : The aims of this study were to assess the occurrence of gallbladder abnormalities and dysfunction, to evaluate clinically useful biomarkers for premalignancy and malignancy in gallbladder epithelium and to assess presence of pancreatic duct changes and early pancreatic abnormalities in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). In paper I and III we investigated presence of gallbladder abnormalities in 286 patients with PSC treated at Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge, between 1970 and 2005. READ MORE

  5. 5. Pancreatic cancer : prevention through improved diagnostics in individuals at risk

    Author : Raffaella Pozzi Mucelli; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : With the intent of timely detecting malignant precursors or pancreatic cancer (PC) in an early stage, current guidelines recommend surveillance for patients with pancreatic cystic neoplasms (PCNs), such as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN), and individuals at risk (IAR) for familiar/hereditary pancreatic cancer (PC). This surveillance is mainly performed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). READ MORE
