  1. 1. Haemoprotozoan Parasites of Non-Human Primates in Kenya : Studies on Prevalence and Characterization of Haemoprotozoan Parasites of Wild-Caught Baboons, African Green Monkeys and Syke's Monkeys

    Author : Maamun Jeneby; Marita Troye; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; haemoprotozoan parasites; nonhuman primates; Kenya; Microbiology; immunology; infectious diseases; Mikrobiologi; immunologi; infektionssjukdomar; Försöksdjursvetenskap - Jämförande medicin; Comparative Medicine;

    Abstract : This thesis reports on cross-sectional surveys aimed at detecting and characterizing haemoprotozoan parasites infecting wild free-ranging non human primates (NHPs) in Kenya, East Africa. Blood samples from olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis), vervet monkeys or African green monkeys (AGMs, Chlorocebus aethiops) and Syke's monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis) from five provinces of Kenya were analyzed. 2. 2. Causes and consequences of blood parasite infections in birds

    Author : Martin Stjernman; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi; Parasitologi människa och djur ; Parasitology human and animal ; maternal transfer; stabilising selection; parasite resistance; parasites; trade-off; cost of reproduction; Ficedula hypoleuca; pied flycatcher; Haemoproteus; blue tit; Parus caeruleus;

    Abstract : Parasites are ubiquitous and can cause significant fitness reductions to their hosts. Therefore, selection for the evolution of host resistance should be strong. However, resistance may be costly and should be traded-off against other fitness related traits. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on Plasmodium falciparum asexual blood stage antigens : RAP-2/RSP-2 and Pf332 in focus

    Author : Nancy Awah; Klavs Berzins; Marcel Hommel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; immunity; malaria; RBCs; anaemia; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : The life cycle of the malaria parasite is very complex and provides a number of potential targets for vaccination. In this thesis, data on two plasmodial asexual blood stage antigens (RAP-2 and Pf332) are presented. READ MORE

  4. 4. On the Effects of Blood Parasites in Wild Birds

    Author : Peter Halvarsson; Jacob Höglund; Staffan Bensch; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Atoxoplasma; avian malaria; coccidia; Gallinago media; Haemoproteus; Leucocytozoon; parasite prevalence; Passer montanus; Plasmodium; recapture mod-els; survival; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Abstract : Coccidian and haemoatozoan parasites are commonly occurring endo-parasites in wild birds and prevalence can vary among species and populations. In addition to prevalence studies, parasites are often used to investigate effects on life history traits. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies of Eosinophil Cationic Protein (ECP) in vivo and in vitro : Impact of Genetic and Posttranslational Modifications

    Author : Jenny Eriksson; Per Venge; Agneta Trulson; Ester Boix; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biomedicine; Eosinophil granulocyte; granular protein; ECP; gene polymorphism; cytotoxicity; SELDI-TOF MS; glycosylation; molecular and functional heterogeneity; fibrosis; Biomedicin;

    Abstract : Eosinophil granulocytes are tissue dwelling leukocytes that are implicated in host defence, particularly against helminthic parasites; they also participate in most inflammatory disorders. Although eosinophils have important roles in host defence mechanisms, their actions can also be harmful to the host as in the allergic inflammation where lung epithelium is destructed due to the release of toxic granule proteins.
