  1. 1. Analysis of deep brain stimulation and ablative lesions in surgical treatment of movement disorders : with emphasis on safety aspects

    Author : Patric Blomstedt; Bengt Linderoth; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; deep brain stimulation; pallidotomy; thalamotomy; complications; Parkinson s disease; essential tremor; Clinical Neurophysiology; klinisk neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Background The last decade has witnessed a renaissance of functional stereotactic neurosurgery in the treatment of patients with movement disorders, especially advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor (ET) and dystonia. Ablative lesions such as thalamotomy and pallidotomy have been gradually replaced by the technique of chronic deep brain stimulation (DBS) applied to targets in the basal ganglia and thalamus, and assumed to be more lenient to the brain than stereotactic radiofrequency lesions. 2. 2. Percutaneous Balloon Compression for the Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia

    Author : Pär Asplund; A. Tommy Bergenheim; Patric Blomstedt; Marc Sindou; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; trigeminal neuralgia; multiple sclerosis; surgery; percutaneous balloon compression; percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizolysis; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Background. Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a paroxysmal unilateral facial pain condition. That it is rather rare is of little comfort to those who are affected, as TN is often described as one of the worst pains known to mankind. Advanced age and multiple sclerosis (MS) are risk factors for developing TN. READ MORE

  3. 3. Functional brain imaging of sensorimotor dysfunction and restoration : investigations of discomplete spinal cord injury and deep brain stimulation for essential tremor

    Author : Amar Awad; Johan Eriksson; Patric Blomstedt; Richard Levi; Lars Nyberg; Rick Helmich; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sensorimotor control; fMRI; discomplete spinal cord injury; essential tremor; deep brain stimulation; cerebello-thalamo-cerebral circuit; Physiology; fysiologi; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery; Neurology; neurologi; rehabiliteringsmedicin; Rehabilitation Medicine;

    Abstract : The nervous system exists to generate adaptive behaviour by processing sensory input from the body and the environment in order to produce appropriate motor output, and vice versa. Consequently, sensorimotor dysfunction is the basis of disability in most neurological pathologies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Deep brain stimulation of the posterior subthalamic area in the treatment of movement disorders

    Author : Anders Fytagoridis; Patric Blomstedt; Joachim Krauss; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Deep brain stimulation; Movement disorders; Posterior subthalamic area; Zona incerta; Prelemniscal radiations; Tremor; Essential tremor; Parkinson s disease; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Background: The posterior subthalamic area (PSA) is essentially composed of the caudal Zona incerta and the prelemniscal radiation. Subthalamotomy in the PSA was renowned for its effectiveness in alleviating movement disorders and particularly tremor. READ MORE

  5. 5. Stereotactic imaging in functional neurosurgery

    Author : Hidehiro Hirabayashi; Patric Blomstedt; Takaomi Taira; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Deep brain stimulation; pallidotomy; thalamotomy; Parkinson s disease; essential tremor; CT; MRI; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Background: The birth of stereotactic functional neurosurgery in 1947 was to a great extent dependent on the development of ventriculography. The last decades have witnessed a renaissance of functional stereotactic neurosurgery in the treatment of patients with movement disorders. READ MORE
