  1. 1. The Language of Textiles : Description and Judgement on Textile Pattern Composition

    Author : Siri Homlong; Christina Fjellström; Edith Skjeggestad; Lillemor Abrahamsson; Liv Merete Nielsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Arts and literature; Textile; Pattern; Design; Amish; Quilt; Aesthetic Qualities; Repertory grid method; Natural Color System; Sloyd; Implicit knowledge; Communication; Structure of attention; Estetiska ämnen;

    Abstract : The present study concerns ways to describe, judge and discuss aesthetic qualities of designed textile patterns. Specific aims were to study how colours and compositions used in Old Amish Quilts can be systematically described, to study how simple and complex patterns in printed textile fabrics are perceived and expressed verbally and to study judgements, concepts and values in relation to designed textile patterns as expressed by schoolchildren, consumers, teachers of textile handicraft and designers. 2. 2. Colour patterns in warning displays

    Author : Marianne Aronsson; Gabriella Gamberale-Stille; Olof Leimar; Candy Rowe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aposematism; warning colouration; colour patterns; avoidance learning; generalization behaviour; signal design; signal evolution; conspicuousness; mimicry; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : In aposematism a prey species use bright colours, often combined with a black contrasting pattern, to signal unprofitability as prey to potential predators. Although there are several different hypotheses about the presence of these internally contrasting patterns, there is little experimental evidence of any beneficial effects. READ MORE

  3. 3. Colour Vision in Birds : Comparing behavioural thresholds and model predictions

    Author : Peter Olsson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Gallus gallus; receptor noise; visual modelling; animal training; colour discrimination; colour constancy;

    Abstract : Birds use colour vision for many biologically relevant behaviours such as foraging and mate choice. Bird colour vision is mediated by four types of single cones, giving them an extra dimension of colour information compared to trichromatic humans. READ MORE

  4. 4. Situation Awareness in Colour Printing and Beyond

    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Machine learning; Data mining; Colour printing; Smart homes;

    Abstract : Machine learning methods are increasingly being used to solve real-world problems in the society. Often, the complexity of the methods are well hidden for users. However, integrating machine learning methods in real-world applications is not a straightforward process and requires knowledge both about the methods and domain knowledge of the problem. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effects of abiotic and biotic factors on hatching, emergence and survival in Baltic salmon (Salmo salar L.)

    Abstract : This thesis deals with important factors that affect the temporal organization of emergence and early survival of Baltic salmon (Salmo salar L.). The study population was obtained from the Norrfors hatchery (63°50'N,20°05'E), Umeälven (Ume river) in Northern Sweden. READ MORE
