16. Development of the Mouse Lateral Telencephalon
Abstract : The telencephalon is the most rostral part of the vertebrate central nervous system and is comprised of a number of structures important for voluntary movements and higher cognitive processes. This thesis focuses on the genetic mechanisms that control development of a number of telencephalic structures: the olfactory bulb, the striatum as well as the lateral and basolateral nuclei of the amygdala. 17. Surface characterization and manipulation of polyampholytic hydrogel coatings
Abstract : This thesis is dedicated to building up fundamental knowledge about polyampholytic hydrogels, which are developed in our group for anti-fouling purposes. Charge-balanced polymers, where positive and negative charges balance each other, have emerged as interesting candidates for many applications in materials science. READ MORE

19. The Physical Foundation of the Patterning of Physical Action Verbs : A Study of Chinese Verbs
Abstract : This work is a study of verbal semantics with a focus on the discussion and illustration of the role of body parts and the semantic incorporation into verbal roots of the actions that involve various body parts. Following a general discussion of the basic issues of language construction and human body actions with the image schemas of force-dynamics presented in line with the framework of cognitive semantics, it is argued that the event structures of physical action verbs are not arbitrarily constructed but rather the constructions are built through systematic cognitive processes in relation to both human physical reality and concrete reality in the world. 20. Bright Lights: Innovative Micro- and Nano-Patterning for Sensing and Tissue Engineering
Abstract : Light is the primary source of energy on our planet and has been a significant driver in the evolution of human society and technology. Light finds applications in two-dimensional (2D) photolithography and three-dimensional (3D) printing, where a pattern is transferred to a material of interest by ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, and in laser scribing and cutting, where high power lasers are used to pattern the surface of objects or cut through the bulk of the material of interest.
