  1. 6. Development of Sheathless Electrospray Mass Spectrometry and Investigations of Associated Electrochemical Processes – A Fairy Tale

    Author : Stefan Nilsson; Karin Markides; Leif Nyholm; Jonas Bergquist; Per Andrén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Analytical chemistry; electrospray; sheathless; mass spectrometry; capillary electrophoresis; electrochemistry; chromatography; interface; fairy dust; gold; Analytisk kemi; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : In microscale separations, such as capillary electrophoresis and -liquid chromatography, the liquid flow rates are in the order of nanoliters per second. If such flow rates are to be interfaced with a mass spectrometer (MS) using electrospray (ES) ionization, without loss of separation efficiency, each fraction of the analyte zone must remain undisturbed by the high voltage contact necessary for ES. 2. 7. Capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry applied to structural proteomics and small molecule analysis

    Author : Jordan Aerts; Erik T. Jansson; Per E. Andrén; Petr Man; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Capillary Electrophoresis Mass Spectrometry; Hydrogen Deuterium Exchange Mass Spectrometry; Enantioselective Separations; Drugs of Abuse; Analytical Chemistry; Analytisk kemi; Analytisk farmaceutisk kemi; Analytical Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot analytisk kemi; Chemistry with specialization in Analytical Chemistry; Biology with specialization in Structural Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot strukturbiologi;

    Abstract : Capillary electrophoresis with mass spectrometric (CE–MS) detection offers a separation method without equal in terms of flexibility, utility, and cost efficiency. Here we demonstrate precisely this through the application of several laboratory-built CE–MS instruments for the separation of brain metabolites in non-primates, enantioselective separations of synthetic anesthetic metabolites in fractionated pony urine, application in structural proteomics workflows, and identification of exogenous alkaloid biotransformationproducts in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). 3. 8. Imaging neurochemical changes associated with Parkinson´s disease and L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia using mass spectrometry

    Author : Elva Fridjonsdottir; Per E. Andrén; Miles Trupp; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mass spectrometry imaging; MALDI; Parkinson´s disease; L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia;

    Abstract : Parkinson’s disease (PD), caused by a loss of midbrain dopamine neurons, is the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide after Alzheimer’s disease. The primary treatment choice for PD is L-DOPA, the precursor for dopamine, which only affects symptoms and does not inhibit disease progression. READ MORE

  4. 9. Studies of the human pancreas to understand the pathologic events leading to type 1 diabetes

    Author : Louise Granlund; Skog Oskar; Olle Korsgren; Marcus Lundberg; Per Andrén; Teresa Rodriguez-Calvo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pancreas; Type 1 Diabetes; Islets of Langerhans; Exocrine tissue; Acinar cells; Islet Microvasculature; Endocrine cells; Extra-islet cells; Insulin; Glucagon; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is classically described as a disease emanating from beta-cell loss, and as such, the beta cells have been the main target of investigation. However, recent years have witnessed a shift in perspective, with T1D being increasingly recognized as a condition that affects the entire pancreas. READ MORE

  5. 10. Integrative Approaches in Shotgun Proteomics : From sample preparation to multifaceted data analysis

    Author : Mariya Nezhyva; Erik T. Jansson; Per Andrén; Gustaf Christoffersson; Jesper Velgaard Olsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : bottom-up proteomics; thermal proteome profiling; mass-spectrometry imaging; data analysis; melanocortin receptor; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Pharmaceutical Science;

    Abstract : Bottom-up proteomics mass-spectrometry gives an opportunity to shed light on var-ious biological aspects/characteristics such as protein composition, its modifications,interactions, and dynamics. Its applications span a wide range of biological sciencesaiming to eventually answer fundamental disease related questions or evaluate drugperformance and predict adverse effects. READ MORE
