1. Heterotopic Ossification : Clinical and Experimental Studies on Risk Factors, Etiology and Inhibition by Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs
Abstract : In this thesis, occurrence of heterotopic ossification (HO) following total hip arthroplasty (THA) was studied. Preventive effects and complications with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were analyzed. Experimental investigations on bone formation were employed to gain insight to the mechanism of NSAIDs action on bone.(I). READ MORE

2. Unraveling the importance of solid and adsorbed phase mercury speciation for methylmercury formation, evasion and bioaccumulation
Abstract : Monomethylmercury, MeHg, is formed under anoxic conditions in waters, sediments and soils and then bioaccumulated and biomagnified in aquatic food webs, negatively effecting both human and wildlife health. It is generally accepted that precipitation of mercury, Hg, and adsorption of Hg to e.g. READ MORE

3. Lung and chest wall properties during mechanical ventilation
Abstract : Background: Mechanical ventilation causes injury to the lungs due to high pressures and high volumes. Pressure affecting the lungs, the transpulmonary pressure, needs to be monitored to minimise harmful side effects but then lung and chest wall mechanics need to be separately considered. READ MORE

4. Visual Odometryin Principle and Practice
Abstract : Vision is the primary means by which we know where we are, what is nearby, and how we are moving. The corresponding computer-vision task is the simultaneous mapping of the surroundings and the localization of the camera. This goes by many names of which this thesis uses Visual Odometry. READ MORE

5. Synthesis and characterization of Ga-containing MAX phase thin films
Abstract : The study of magnetic Mn+1AXn (MAX) phases (n = 1 − 3, M – a transition metal, A – an A group element, X – C or N) is a recently established research area, fuelled by theoretical predictions and first confirmed experimentally through alloying of Mn into the well-known Cr2AlC and Cr2GeC. Theoretical phase stability investigations suggested a new magnetic MAX phase, Mn2GaC, containing Ga which is liquid close to room temperature. READ MORE
