  1. 21. Hospital length stay : register-based studies on breast cancer surgery

    Author : Rikard Lindqvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Length of stay; breast cancer; breast surgery; social factors;

    Abstract : The present investigation focused on three main questions: what factors can determine length of stay for primary surgery for breast cancer? Can these factors be attributed to the decreasing trend in mean length of stay for primary breast-cancer surgery? And can there be any adverse effect of declining length of stay, such as prolonged sick leave, following breast-cancer surgery? For the four studies of the thesis, routinely collected data was used. In study I the Swedish Hospital Discharge Register was used to describe the trend in mean length of stay of women surgically treated for breast cancer and to investigate the effect of the increasing use of breast-conserving surgery on the decreasing trend in mean length of stay. 2. 22. Cardiovascular and sympatho-adrenal responses to mental stress with special reference to the regulation of human forearm blood flow

    Keywords : adrenaline; axillary blockade; beta-receptor blockader; calcium channel blockers; cholinergic blockingagents; felodipine; hypertension-primary; noradrenaline; skeletal muscle; sodium nitroprusside; stress-psychologicai; vascular resistance;

    Abstract : The cardiovascular and sympatho-adrenal responses to a standardized mental stress test (Stroop's colour word conflict test CWT) were studied in 63 healthy and 11 hypertensive men by intraarterial pressure measurements, forearm blood flow by occlusion plethysmography and noradrenaline (NA) and adrenaline (ADR) determinations in arterial and venous plasma. One study included central hemodynamics by right heart catheterization and NA turnover by an isotope dilution method, permitting studies of NA kinetics in the whole body and in a regional vascular bed (the forearm) in hypertensive patients and age-matched controls.
