  1. 16. Effect of elevated pCO2 and environmental oxazepam on the behavior and physiology of teleost fish

    Author : Laura E. Vossen; Svante Winberg; Robert Gerlai; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; fish; GABA; CO2; ocean acidification; pharmaceutical pollution; oxazepam;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis investigated the effect of two aquatic pollutants on the behavior and physiology of teleost fish: i) elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the context of ocean acidification and ii) low concentrations of the anxiolytic pharmaceutical oxazepam in the context of pharmaceutical pollution.Anthropogenic emissions of CO2 are lowering the pH of the oceans. 2. 17. Fish foraging under visual constraints

    Author : Mikael Jönsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; planktivore.; piscivore; brownification; visual foraging; Turbidity;

    Abstract : Visual conditions are changing in several different ways. Some lakes are getting turbid due to eutrophication or erosion while others are getting browner due to brownification. These two types of visual degradation results in completely different optical properties of lakes. READ MORE

  3. 18. Phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp

    Author : Lars Pettersson; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Benefits; Costs; Predation; Chemical cues; Fish; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have investigated factors (cues, benefits, and costs) affecting the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Inducible defences are favoured over permanent defences when prey have reliable cues to detect predators, when defences are effective but costly, and when predation pressure is variable and unpredictable, but sometimes strong. 4. 19. The fate and effect of pharmaceuticals in boreal surface waters

    Author : Johan Fahlman; Jonatan Klaminder; Jan Karlsson; Fredrik Jutfelt; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aquatic ecosystems; behavioural effects; ecotoxicology; acoustic telemetry; field verification; social network; ekotoxikologi; Ecotoxicology; environmental science; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Traces of pharmaceuticals are often found in streams, rivers, and lakes as the result of effluent water discharge. This dissertation aims to create a better understanding of the fate of drugs in aquatic ecosystems and how oxazepam, an anxiolytic pharmaceutical commonly detected in surface waters, affects the behavior of perch (Perca fluviatilis). 5. 20. Biochemical characterisation of landfill leachate toxicity in fish

    Author : Maria Linderoth; Lennart Balk; Ulf Rannug; Cinta Porte Visa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; landfill leachate; endocrine disruption; fish; Environmental toxicology; Miljötoxikologi;

    Abstract : Deposition remains the most common form of waste disposal in many parts of the world. As a terminus of the products consumed in our society a landfill may contain virtually all sorts of man-made chemicals. Despite this, the harmfulness of landfill leachate has not been extensively evaluated in feral organisms in the environment. READ MORE
