  1. 11. On the use of light for the characterization and treatment of malignant tumours

    Author : Claes af Klinteberg; Atomfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Diffusion equation; Aminolevulinic acid; Protoporphyrin IX; Photodynamic therapy; Fluorescence spectroscopy; Fluorescence imaging; Laser-Doppler perfusion imaging; Atom- och molekylärfysik; Atomic and molecular physics; Multiple scattering; Tissue optics; Tissue optical properties; Fysicumarkivet A:1999:Klinteberg;

    Abstract : Some aspects on the use of light for tissue characterization and treatment of malignant tumours are discussed within this thesis. The work presented aims at improving optical techniques for tissue characterization, especially to detect malignant and pre-malignant lesions. READ MORE

  2. 12. Haemodynamic and ventilatory effects of laparoscopic surgery

    Author : Lena Andersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Laparoscopy; C02 pneumoperitoneum; indicator- dilution technique; central haemodynamics; cardiac output; central blood volume; venous occlusion plethysmography; catecholamines; multiple inert gas technique; shunt; abdominal wall lift; intrathoracic pressure; ventilation-perfusion matching; atelectasis; spiral computed tomography.;

    Abstract : Background: It has been shown repeatedly that the establishment of pneumoperitoneum (PP) is associated with increased cardiac filling pressures, as well as increased blood pressure and systemic vascular resistance. Patients without heart or lung disease can compensate for these effects of PP, but cardiopulmonary compromised patients may develop cardiac failure during PP. READ MORE

  3. 13. Beat-to-beat variability of QRS amplitude and heart rate in ischemic heart disease : diagnostic potentials

    Author : Inger Hagerman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : autonomic blockade; beat-to-beat variability; chaos; coronary arterydisease; correlation dimension; dobutamine; ECG; electrical heterogeneity; fractal dimension; heart rate variability; Lyapunov exponent; nonlinear; QRSvariance; surrogate data;

    Abstract : The diagnostic potential of beat-to-beat QRS amplitude variability in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) was evaluated with variance ECG and compared to exercise stress test and myocardial scintigraphy (SPECT). Two high prevalence populations of 199 and 166 patients each were investigated. READ MORE

  4. 14. Endothelin receptor antagonism and hypertonic solutions in experimental endotoxin shock

    Author : Anna Somell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : sepsis; endotoxin; fluid resuscitation; hypertonic saline dextran; endothelin; tezosentan;

    Abstract : Sepsis is a common and serious condition among patients in the intensive care unit. It is characterized by a systemic inflammatory response, resulting in cardiovascular instability and impaired organ tissue oxygenation due to hypoperfusion and inflammatory changes. READ MORE

  5. 15. Factors influencing splanchnic microcirculation in animal models of endotoxaemia

    Author : Andreas Andersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Microcirculation;

    Abstract : Even though severe sepsis and septic shock therapy has improved in recent years, mortality remains high (22-50%). Disturbances in splanchnic organ homeostasis and increases in gut permeability have long been presumed to contribute to systemic inflammation and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in critical illness and septic shock.
