  1. 1. Evolutionary Dynamics of Mutation and Gene Transfer in Bacteria

    Author : Peter A Lind; Dan I Andersson; J. Arjan G. M. de Visser; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fitness cost; bacterial evolution; gene amplification; mutational biases; GC content; synonymous substitutions; horizontal gene transfer; experimental evolution; Bacteriology; Bakteriologi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Genetics; Genetik; Biology; Biologi; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : The study of bacterial evolution is fundamental for addressing current problems of antibiotic resistance and emerging infectious diseases and lays a solid foundation for successful and rational design in biotechnology and synthetic biology. The main aim of this thesis is to test evolutionary hypotheses, largely based on theoretical considerations and sequence analysis, by designing scenarios in a laboratory setting to obtain experimental data. 2. 2. Studies on cell wall recycling and modification in Gram-negative bacteria

    Author : Michael C. Gilmore; Felipe Cava; Peter A Lind; Teresa Frisan; Jean-François Collet; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Peptidoglycan recycling; bacterial cell wall; antibiotics; Agrobacterium tumefaciens; Escherichia coli; Legionella pneumophila; mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The bacterial cell wall is made from peptidoglycan (PG), a heteropolymer which forms a bag-like exoskeleton that envelopes the cell. PG is constantly remodelled during growth and division, and in response to environmental stimuli. READ MORE

  3. 3. Risk Factors for Stroke in Adult Men : A Population-based Study

    Author : Bernice Wiberg; Lars Lind; Johan Sundström; Björn Zethelius; Peter Appelros; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; risk factor; stroke; TIA; lipoproteins; fatty acids; insulin resistance; proinsulin; clamp; cognitive function; epidemiology; Trail Making Test; stroke mortality; dependency; Geriatrics and medical gerontology; Geriatrik och medicinsk gerontologi; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : In the last decades our knowledge concerning cardiovascular risk factors has grown rapidly through results from longitudinal studies. However, despite new treatment, in Western countries coronary heart disease remains the leading cause of death and stroke is still the leading cause of severe disability. READ MORE

  4. 4. Levodopa pharmacokinetics -from stomach to brain : A study on patients with Parkinson’s disease

    Author : Maria Nord; Nil Dizdar; Jonas Lind; Peter Söderkvist; Filip Bergquist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders and it is caused by a loss of dopamine (DA) producing neurons in the basal ganglia in the brain. The PD patient suffers from motor symptoms such as tremor, bradykinesia and rigidity and treatment with levodopa (LD), the precursor of DA, has positive effects on these symptoms. READ MORE

  5. 5. A study of tailoring acoustic porous material properties when designing lightweight multilayered vehicle panels

    Author : Eleonora Lind Nordgren; Peter Göransson; Olivier Dazel; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; porous material; optimization; Biot theory; acoustic wave propagation;

    Abstract : The present work explores the possibilities of adapting poro-elastic lightweight acoustic materials to specific applications. More explicitly, a design approach is presented where finite element based numerical simulations are combined with optimization techniques to improve the dynamic and acoustic properties of lightweight multilayered panels containing poro-elastic acoustic materials.
