  1. 1. Groundwater-Seawater Interactions : Seawater Intrusion, Submarine Groundwater Discharge and Temporal Variability and Randomness Effects

    Author : Carmen Prieto; Georgia Destouni; Vassilios Kaleris; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydraulic engineering; Seawater intrusion; submarine groundwater discharge; coastal groundwater management; coastal zone management; temporal variability; temporal randomness; Vattenteknik; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : Fresh groundwater quality and availability in coastal areas is affected by seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers, and coastal water quality and ecosystem status may be significantly affected by groundwater pollutants that are transported into coastal waters by submarine groundwater dis-charge (SGD). This thesis uses an overall regional perspective for investigating: i) seawater intru-sion and its possible control in sustainable coastal groundwater management; ii) SGD and its relevant quantification as one interacting part among the diverse main regional pathways of freshwater and tracer/pollutant inputs from land to sea; and iii) the integrated system functioning of both i) and ii) as main components of the same coastal groundwater system. 2. 2. Electrochemical detection of trace metals: from traditional techniques to new ultrathin membrane electrodes

    Author : Kequan Xu; Gaston A. Crespo; Maria Cuartero; Tom Lindfors; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ion-selective electrodes; ion-stripping voltammetry; ultrathin membranes; interconnected ion-transfer and charge-transfer processes; trace metals; environmental waters; jonselektiva elektroder; jon-strippande voltammetri; ultratunna membran; sammankopplade jonöverförings- och laddningsöverförings-processer; spårmetaller; miljövatten; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Accurate detection of trace metals in environmental waters is an analytical challenge that is still open for the time being. The current state of the field reveals the predominance of the so-called hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) for multi-metal detection by means of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) readout. 3. 3. Factors influencing emission fluxes and bacterial enrichment in sea spray aerosols : Insights from laboratory and field studies

    Author : Julika Zinke; Matthew E. Salter; Paul Zieger; Rachel A. Foster; E. Douglas Nilsson; Patricia K. Quinn; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sea spray aerosols; eddy covariance fluxes; air-sea-exchange; bacteria; primary biological airborne particles; laboratory studies; field studies; Baltic Sea; North-Eastern Atlantic; Environmental Sciences; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Sea spray aerosol (SSA) is one of the major natural aerosol sources and is produced when wave breaking entrains air into ocean surface water, which subsequently breaks up into bubbles. These bubbles rise to the surface and can scavenge biogenic material. READ MORE

  4. 4. Sperm motility in Gasterosteiform fishes : The role of salinity and ovarian fluid

    Author : Helena Elofsson; Bertil Borg; Matthew Gage; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : In externally fertilising fishes, various factors in the surrounding environment may influence the viability of the sperm and eggs, thus determining the success of reproduction. In this thesis, the influence of salinity and ovarian fluid on sperm motility has been investigated in three Gasterosteiform fishes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Groundwater characterisation and modelling

    Author : Marcus Laaksoharju; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : For the last 10 years, the Äspö Hard RockLaboratory (HRL) in Sweden has been the main test site for thedevelopment of suitable methods for the final disposal of spentnuclear fuel. Major achievements have been made in thedevelopment of new groundwater sampling and modellingtechniques. READ MORE
