  2. 2. Microbe-induced apoptosis in phagocytic cells and its role in innate immunity

    Author : Robert Blomgran; Olle Stendahl; Limin Zheng; Boris Zhivotovsky; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; apoptosis; cell death; inflammation; innate immunity; microbiology; neutrophil; macrophage; phagocyte; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a controlled process by which aged or damages cells are eliminated in multicellular organisms. Neutrophils, short-lived phagocytes of the innate immune system, are highly equipped effectors that can sense, locate, ingest and kill bacterial pathogens. READ MORE

  3. 3. Modulation of mononuclear phagocyte function in the dissemination of Toxoplasma gondii

    Author : Arne L. ten Hoeve; Antonio Barragan; Nicolas Blanchard; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Apicomplexa; dendritic cell; macrophage; intracellular signaling; parasite-derived effector protein; chemotaxis; leukocyte migration; transcription factor; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular Apicomplexan parasite that could possibly infect all warm-blooded animals. Acute infections with T. READ MORE

  4. 4. Neutrophil function in health and disease - role of intracellular radicals and galectin-3 as regulators of inflammation

    Author : Martina Sundqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neutrophils; reactive oxygen species; galectin-3; PFAPA;

    Abstract : The focus for this PhD project has been to investigate neutrophil functions in different (inflammatory) settings with specific focus on phagocyte-derived intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as neutrophil interaction with the inflammatory mediator galectin-3. Neutrophils, the most abundant leukocyte in human blood, have traditionally been viewed upon mainly as professional phagocytes, being able to degrade invading microbes, and thus essential in the defence against infection. 5. 5. Phagocyte-induced apoptosis in natural killer cells and T cells. Role of reactive oxygen species and regulation by histamine

    Author : Markus Hansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Malignant tumors frequently contain an infiltrate of leukocytes, usually cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage and lymphocytes with anti-tumor activity such as natural killer (NK) cells and T cells. Clinical and experimental data suggest that monocytes/macrophages in tumors inhibit functions of adjacent NK cells/T cells and thereby suppress lymphocyte-dependent anti-tumor immunity. READ MORE
