6. The Role of Cyclooxygenase-2 in Models of Epilepsy and Traumatic Brain Injury : Effects of Selective Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitors
Abstract : Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) catalyses prostaglandin synthesis from arachidonic acid during inflammation. COX-2 is expressed in the normal brain and is induced in neurological disorders. There is evidence that COX-2 is involved in secondary events leading to cell death in the brain. READ MORE

7. Arachidonic acid metabolism in corneal epithelial cells : Identification of lipoxygenase isoforms
Abstract : The metabolism of arachidonic acid in the human cornea was investigated and compared with the metabolism in cattle and primates. All three species showed significant arachidonic acid metabolism inthe epithelium, whereas the activity in the stroma and the endothelium was low or undetectable. READ MORE

8. The Role of the Melanocortin System in Linking Energy Homeostasis with Reward Mechanisms
Abstract : There is evidence of a link between peripheral signals of energy homeostasis and reward mechanisms. A hypothesis was formulated that the melanocortin (MC) system is part of this link. The hypothesis was tested by a series of receptor expression and neurochemical studies in rats. READ MORE

9. Cytochrome P450 Enzymes in the Metabolism of Cholesterol and Cholesterol Derivatives
Abstract : Cholesterol is metabolized to a variety of important biological products in the body including bile acids and vitamin D. The present investigation is focused on enzymes that catalyze 7α-hydroxylation or 27-hydroxylation in the metabolism of cholesterol, oxysterols (side chain-hydroxylated derivatives of cholesterol) and vitamin D3. 10. Involvement of the Opioid System in High Alcohol Consumption : Environmental and Genetic Influences
Abstract : It is well accepted that both inherent and environmental factors influence the pathogenesis of alcohol dependence. This thesis investigates the role of the opioid system in the initiation and maintenance of high ethanol intake. READ MORE
