  1. 1. Fate of Pharmaceuticals and Their Transformation Products in Rivers : An integration of target analysis and screening methods to study attenuation processes

    Author : Zhe Li; Anna Sobek; Michael McLachlan; Michael Radke; Kathrin Fenner; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pharmaceuticals; transformation products; fate; river; suspect screening; non-target screening; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Pharmaceuticals are environmental contaminants causing steadily increasing concern due to their high usage, ubiquitous distribution in the aquatic environment, and potential to exert adverse effects on the ecosystems. After being discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), pharmaceuticals can undergo transformation processes in surface waters, of which microbial degradation in river sediments is considered highly significant. 2. 2. Improving the transparency and predictability of environmental risk assessments of pharmaceuticals

    Author : Marlene Ågerstrand; Christina Rudén; Cynthia de Wit; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; environmental risk assessment; pharmaceuticals; transparency; predictability; accuracy; consistency; voluntary initiatives; reliability evaluation; non-standard test data.; Philosophy subjects; Filosofiämnen;

    Abstract : The risk assessment process and the subsequent risk management measures need tobe constantly evaluated, updated and improved. This thesis contributes to that workby considering, and suggesting improvements, regarding aspects like userfriendliness,transparency, accuracy, consistency, data reporting, data selection anddata evaluation. 3. 3. Application of ozone in wastewater treatment : Oxidation of pharmaceuticals and filamentous bulking sludge

    Author : Filip Nilsson; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ozone; Filamentous Sludge; Pharmaceuticals; Wastewater Treatment; Ozone; Filamentous bulking sludge; Pharmaceutical reduction;

    Abstract : As pharmaceutical removal was not part of the of the modern wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) design, it is not surprising that WWTPs have been identified as major point sources of pharmaceuticals entering the environment. The oxidation of pharmaceuticals in the WWTP effluent is one of the-end-of-pipe solutions that are considered most ready for full-scale use. READ MORE

  4. 4. Transcriptomics and bioconcentration studies in fish to identify pharmaceuticals of environmental concern

    Author : Filip Cuklev Stern; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; fish; microarray; bioconcentration; pharmaceuticals; wastewater treatment; environment;

    Abstract : Pharmaceuticals are frequently found in the aquatic environment. As they are most often highly biologically active, quite persistent and may accumulate in aquatic organisms, i.e. bioconcentrate, they may pose a risk to non-target organisms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sorption and transformation of polar pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment studied by hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction

    Author : Estelle Larsson; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pharmaceuticals; wastewater treatment; sludge; hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses the application of hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction as a simple, efficient and environmentally friendly tool to study the fate of four common anti-inflammatory drugs (ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and ibuprofen) during wastewater treatment. Initial experiments verified that this technique is applicable on aqueous as well as suspensions of solid samples, thus greatly simplifying the sample preparation. READ MORE
