  1. 1. Benefits of Non-Linear Mixed Effect Modeling and Optimal Design : Pre-Clinical and Clinical Study Applications

    Author : Charles Ernest II; Andrew Hooker; Mats Karlsson; Bart Ploeger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacometrics; optimal design; nonlinear mixed effects models; population models; Pharmaceutical Science; Farmaceutisk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Despite the growing promise of pharmaceutical research, inferior experimentation or interpretation of data can inhibit breakthrough molecules from finding their way out of research institutions and reaching patients. This thesis provides evidence that better characterization of pre-clinical and clinical data can be accomplished using non-linear mixed effect modeling (NLMEM) and more effective experiments can be conducted using optimal design (OD). 2. 2. Synthesis of Aldehyde-Functionalized Building Blocks and Their Use for the Cyclization of Peptides : Applications to Angiotensin II

    Author : Petra Johannesson; Rob M. J. Liskamp; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Synthesis; Aldehyde; Cyclization; Peptide; Angiotensin II; Ang II; Bioactive Conformation; Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis; Dimethyl Acetal; Farmaceutisk kemi; Syntes; Aldehyd; Cyklisering; Peptid; Bioaktiv konformation; Fast-fas peptidsyntes; Dimetylacetal; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Organic Pharmaceutical Chemistry; organisk farmaceutisk kemi;

    Abstract : This study addresses the issue of how to convert peptides into drug-like non- peptides with retained biological activities at peptide receptors. Angiotensin II (Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe, Ang II) was used as a model peptide. READ MORE

  3. 3. Fundamental in-situ and ex-situ studies of energy storage related materials including different applications of voltammetry

    Author : Ulrik Palmqvist; Patrice Millet; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ni-Cd pocket plate batteries; b-Ni OH 2; b-NiOOH; failures; goethite; surface complexation; Pb II ; Zn II ; Cu II ; Cd II ; in-situ; carbon; nanostructured; voltammetry; X-ray diffraction; electrical test; potentiometry; TEM; chlorination; oorganisk kemi; Inorganic Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis is a summary and discussion of eight papers dealing with failures and structural aspects of Ni-Cd industrial pocket plate batteries, applications of voltammetry in adsorption studies on goethite (a-FeOOH) surfaces and synthesis and characterisation of nanostructured carbons. The work consists of different areas of chemistry; electrochemistry, structural chemistry and solution chemistry. READ MORE

  4. 4. Support for women with breast cancer, and for the district and hospital nurses involved : an intervention study

    Author : Maj-Britt Pålsson; Astrid Norberg; Ingalill Hallberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intervention; support; organizational changes of the care; systematic clinical supervision; breast cancer patients; district nurses; hospital nurses; experiences; well-being ill-being; hopelessness; anxiety; depression; burnout; empathy; sense of coherence; the Karolinska scales of personality;

    Abstract : The purpose of this study was to investigate breast cancer patients’ experiences of their illness and of traditional nursing care (TNC) or supportive nursing care (SNC) respectively, as well as nurses' experiences of support and of caring for cancer patients. An intervention including extended co-operation between the surgical ward and primary health care, shorter waiting times, and changed routines concerning the information about the diagnosis, as well as training and systematic clinical supervision for the nurses, was implemented. 5. 5. Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder : Prevalence, Diagnostic aspects, Associated factors and Treatment concepts

    Author : Katarina Danielsson; Agneta Markström; Broman Jan-Erik; Markus Jansson-Fröjmark; Lars von Knorring; Pallesen Ståle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; delayed sleep phase disorder; prevalence; diagnostic aspects; associated factors; light therapy and cognitive behavior therapy;

    Abstract : Delayed sleep phase disorder (DSPD) is the most common circadian rhythm sleep disorder. Persons with DSPD have great difficulties falling asleep and waking up at conventional times. To diagnose DSPD this delayed sleep-wake rhythm should cause social impairment and distress for the individual. READ MORE
