  1. 1. Accidental hypothermia and local cold injury : physiological and epidemiological studies on risk

    Author : Helge Brändström; Michael Haney; Urban Wiklund; Anders Eriksson; Karl-Axel Ängquist; Ola Winsö; Sigridur Kalman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cold-related injuries; hypothermia; frostbite; cold adaptation; rewarming; autonomic nervous system; heart rate variability;

    Abstract : Background: (Papers I and II) The objectives were to first determine incidence and contributing factors to cold-related injuries in northern Sweden, both those that led to hospitalization and those that led to fatality.  (Papers III and IV) A further aim was to assess post-cooling hand-rewarming responses and effects of training in a cold environment, both on fingertip rewarming and on function of the autonomic nervous system, to evaluate if there was adaptation related to prolonged occupational cold exposure. 2. 2. Calcified carotid artery atheromas in panoramic radiographs : diagnostic reliability and association to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and periodontitis

    Author : Nils Gustafsson; Eva Levring Jäghagen; Jan Ahlqvist; Ulf Näslund; Per Wester; Annika Ekestubbe; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Panoramic radiographs; cardiovascular disease; carotid artery atheromas; diabetes mellitus; oral health; periodontitis; diagnostic accuracy; myocardial infraction; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Objective: Incidental findings of Calcified Carotid Artery Atheromas (CCAA) on Panoramic Radiographs (PRs) of the jaws can be a risk marker for cardiovascular disease. The objectives for the thesis were to investigate the association between CCAA and 1) Myocardial Infarction (MI), 2) periodontitis, 3) diabetes and 4) estimated cardiovascular risk. READ MORE

  3. 3. Chlamydia trachomatis as a risk factor for infertility in women and men, and ovarian tumor development

    Author : Annika Idahl; Ulrika Ottander; Jan I Olofsson; Eva Lundin; Fredrik Elgh; Jorma Paavonen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; antibodies; borderline tumors; Chlamydia trachomatis; cHSP60; DNA; infertility; ovarian cancer; pregnancy rate; RNA; semen characteristics; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Obstetrik och gynekologi; obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Abstract : Background: Chlamydia trachomatis in women is a risk factor for tubal factor infertility and extra uterine pregnancies, but the impact of a C. trachomatis infection on male fertility is unclear. It is also hypothesized that persistent infection with C. trachomatis, or other microorganisms, might initiate/promote ovarian tumor development. READ MORE

  4. 4. Incidental Gallbladder Cancer : Incidence, predictors, management and outcome in a Swedish population

Whether to perform routine or selective histopathology of the gallbladder specimen is still a subject for discussion. READ MORE

    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The aircraft design process has several phases, the first of which is conceptual design. In this phase, models describing an aircraft concept’s properties are used to evaluate its function and identify designs that meet given requirements. READ MORE
