  1. 1. Nutrient Limitation of Bacterial Growth in Soil

    Author : Fredrik Demoling; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ekologi; Ecology; Fertilization; Bacteria; Soil; Fungi; Thymidine or Leucine incorporation; Growth limitation; Phosphorus; Nitrogen; Carbon;

    Abstract : Lack of carbon has been assumed to be the most common limiting factor for bacterial growth in soil, although there are reports of limitation by nitrogen and phosphorus. I have studied nutrient limitation of bacterial growth in soil using a novel technique, where thymidine or leucine incorporation is used to detect changes in growth rates after adding nutrients. 2. 2. On the ecophysiology of Baltic cyanobacteria focusing on bottom-up factors

    Author : Malin Mohlin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Allelopathy; Aphanizomenon sp.; Baltic Sea; Cyanobacteria; Diazotrophic; Multi-factorial; Nitrogen; Nodularin; photosynthetic active radiation; Phosphorus; ultraviolet radiation; UV-A; UV-B;

    Abstract : Cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea are dominated by diazotrophic cyanobacteria, i.e. Aphanizomenon sp. and Nodularia spumigena. READ MORE

  3. 3. The role of nutrients for stream ecosystem function in Arctic landscapes : drivers of productivity under environmental change

    Author : Maria Myrstener; Ryan A. Sponseller; Reiner Giesler; Ann-Kristin Bergström; Tenna Riis; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nutrients; Stream; Arctic; Boreal; Primary productivity; Algae; Biofilm; Nutrient limitation; Nitrogen; Phosphorus;

    Abstract : Arctic and sub-Arctic freshwaters are currently experiencing substantial ecosystem changes due to the effects of global warming. Global warming effects on these freshwaters include increasing water temperatures, altered hydrological patterns, shifts in riparian vegetation and changes in the export of nutrients and carbon from soils. 4. 4. Molecular detection of abundance and activity of marine, symbiotic, N2-fixing cyanobacteria

    Author : Linnéa Ström; Rachel Foster; Daniel Lundin; Katharina Pawlowski; Rehab El-Shehawy; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Diatom Diazotroph Association; Richelia; Iron; Phosphorus; Nitrogen; nifH; pstS; exbB; rnpA; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; marinbiologi; Marine Biology;

    Abstract : Marine primary productivity in large parts of the oceans is supported by nitrogen fixers (diazotrophs). Richelia, a genus of multiple closely related species of heterocystous filamentous cyanobacterial diazotrophs, are often found in symbioses with a few genera of diatoms. Several Richelia species: R. euintracellularis, R. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nitrogen effluents from mine sites in northern Sweden : nitrogen transformations and limiting nutrient in receiving waters

    Author : Sara Chlot; Anders Lundkvist; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : Process water discharged from mine sites may contain elevated concentrations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), which both are nutrients for algae and aquatic plants. Thus, discharge of nutrient rich mine water can result in algal blooms, eutrophication, oxygen deficiency and changed species composition in the receiving waters. READ MORE
