  1. 21. Environmental impact of peat mining : Development of storm water treatment methods

    Author : Bjørn Kløve; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; geographical and geological engineering; Hydrogeology; drainage artificial floodplaines; phosphorus; suspended solids; nitrogen; erosion; peat mining; peak runoff controll; sedimentation; water treatment; water resources; hydrology; hydraulics; Hydrogeologi; teknisk geologi; teknisk geografi; Geophysics; physical oceanography; meteorology; Geofysik; fysisk oceanografi; meteorologi;

    Abstract : Drainage of peatlands increases the transport of suspended solids (SS) and the leaching of nutrients to downstream receiving waters. Increased settling of peat and eutrophication of lakes has been noted in many studies downstream from peat mines. READ MORE

  2. 22. Dynamic modelling of the forest ecosystem: Incorporation of the phosphorus cycle

    Author : Lin Yu; BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dynamic modeling; forest ecosystem; phosphorus cycle;

    Abstract : The forest ecosystem provides and regulates many important ecosystem services, such as soil and water protection, timber production, and climate regulation. It has been influenced by changes induced by humans, for example, our increasing demand for timber and bioenergy, the increase in nitrogen (N) deposition and CO2 concentrations due to industrialization, and climate change which has caused an increase in global temperature and extreme events such as storms. 3. 23. Recycling Filter Substrates used for Phosphorus Removal from Wastewater as Soil Amendments

    Author : Victor Cucarella Cabañas; Gunno Renman; Greg Morrison; KTH; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Compact filter; Filtra P; Phosphorus recycling; Polonite; Soil amendment; Sorption isotherms; Soil science; Markvetenskap; Solution chemistry; Lösningskemi; Agricultural engineering; Jordbruksteknik; Water engineering; Vattenteknik; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : This thesis studied the viability of recycling filter substrates as soil amendments after being used in on-site systems for phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater. Focus was put on the materials Filtra P and Polonite, which are commercial products used in compact filters in Sweden. READ MORE

  4. 24. Optimizing processes for biological nitrogen removal in Nakivubo wetland, Uganda

    Author : Joseph Kyambadde; Gunnel Dalhammar; Karin Tonderski-Sundblad; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Environmental technology; Ammonium-oxidizing bacteria; Biological nitrogen removal; Coliform retention; Constructed wetlands; Cyperus papyrus; Miljöteknik; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : The ability of Nakivubo wetland (which has performed tertiary water treatment for Kampala city for the past 40 years) to respond to pollution and to protect the water quality of Inner Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria was investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the capacity of Nakivubo wetland to remove nitrogen from the wastewater after its recent encroachment and modification, in order to optimize biological nitrogen removal processes using constructed wetland technology. 5. 25. Greenhouse gas production in nitrogen removal wetlands

    Author : Johanna Stadmark; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Nitrogen removal wetlands are constructed in agricultural areas as a measure to reduce the amount of non-point source nitrogen that reaches coastal areas. Methane and nitrous oxide, two greenhouse gases, are produced under anaerobic conditions and an increased amount of waterlogged areas will therefore increase the potential emission of these gases.
