11. Development of Nanoparticle Sensitized Solar Cells
Abstract : In this thesis, I have been working with the development of nanoparticle sensitized solar cells. In the subarea of quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs), I have investigated type-II quantum dots (QDs), quantum rods (QRs) and alloy QDs, and developed novel redox couples as electrolytes. 12. Using Low Energy Light to Enable High Energy Photochemistry
Abstract : Manipulating light to meet human needs is pivotal in various research fields and technological applications, ranging from solar energy conversion to photodynamic therapy and fluorescence imaging of cells and tissues. This thesis addresses the spectral mismatches between available light and the specific energy requirements of target photochemical reactions by employing low-energy light to control high-energy photochemistry. 13. Excitonic Effects and Energy Upconversion in Bulk and Nanostructured ZnO
Abstract : Zinc Oxide (ZnO), a II-VI wurtzite semiconductor, has been drawing enormous research interest for decades as an electronic material for numerous applications. It has a wide and direct band gap of 3.37eV and a large exciton binding energy of 60 meV that leads to intense free exciton (FX) emission at room temperature. READ MORE

14. Optical spectroscopy and fluorescence imaging for cancer diagnostics
Abstract : This work presents optical methods for diagnosing cancer. A complementary method for diagnosing eye cancer was investigated using a technique developed within this work named transscleral optical spectroscopy (TOS). READ MORE

15. Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging of Turbid Media
Abstract : This thesis deals with optical spectroscopy and imaging of complex and strongly scattering turbid media. Focus is mainly placed on three topics, being i) diffuse optical spectroscopy of choroidal tumors, ii) gas spectroscopy in scattering materials using the GASMAS (gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy) technique, and iii) luminescence diffuse optical imaging and tomography of tissues.
