  1. 11. Silicon Based Photonic Devices and Their Applications

    Author : Qiang Li; Min Qiu; Geert Morthier; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Optics; Optik;

    Abstract : The integration of modern electronic devices for information processing is rapidly ap-proaching an interconnect bottleneck. Silicon photonics can be a promising solution forcircumventing this bottleneck, as already being anticipated by many electronics manu-facturers including HP, IBM and Intel. READ MORE

  2. 12. Fabrication and Characterization of Photonic Crystals, Optical Metamaterials and Plasmonic Devices

    Author : Jing Wang; Min Qiu; Min Yan; Ping Shum; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Photonic crystals; metamaterials; plasmonics; Photonics; Fotonik; SRA - ICT; SRA - Informations- och kommunikationsteknik;

    Abstract :  Nanophotonics is an emerging research field that deals with interaction between light and matter in a sub-micron length scale. Nanophotonic devices have found an increasing number of applications in many areas including optical communication, microscopy, sensing, and solar energy harvesting especially during the past two decades. 3. 13. Technology and properties of InP-based photonic crystal structures and devices

    Author : Naeem Shahid; Srinivasan Anand; Rob W. vad der Heijden; KTH; []
    Keywords : Integrated optics materials; Photonic crystals; Planar waveguides; Dispersion; Band-gap; Mode-gap; mini-stopband; InP; Nanostructure fabrication; dry etching; mass transport; material reflow; reliability; SRA - ICT; SRA - Informations- och kommunikationsteknik;

    Abstract : Photonic crystals (PhCs) are periodic dielectric structures that exhibit a photonic band gap; a range of wavelengths for which light propagation is forbidden. 2D PhCs exhibit most of the properties as their three dimension counterparts with a compatibility with standard semiconductor processing techniques such as epitaxial growth, electron beam lithography, Plasma deposition/etching and electromechanical lapping/polishing. 4. 14. Epitaxial III-V/Si heterojunctions for photonic devices

    Author : Giriprasanth Omanakuttan; Sebastian Lourdudoss; Yanting Sun; Harri Lipsanen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; epitaxy; heterojunction; III-V on Si integration; solar cell; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Monolithic integration of III-V materials on silicon is of great interest for efficient electronic-photonic integrated devices and multijunction solar cells on silicon. However, defect formation in the heteroepitaxial layers due to lattice mismatch, thermal mismatch, and polarity mismatch makes it a great challenge. READ MORE

  5. 15. Technology for photonic components in silica/silicon material structure

    Author : Lech Wosinski; KTH; []
    Keywords : silica-on-silicon technology; PECVD; plasma deposition; photonic integrated circuits; planar waveguide devices; UV Bragg gratings; photosensitivity; arrayed waveguide gratings; multimode interference couplers; add-drop multiplexers;

    Abstract : The main objectives of this thesis were to develop a lowtemperature PECVD process suitable for optoelectronicintegration, and to optimize silica glass composition forUV-induced modifications of a refractive index in PECVDfabricated planar devices. The most important achievement isthe successful development of a low temperature silicadeposition, which for the first time makes it is possible tofabricate good quality low loss integrated components whilekeeping the temperature below 250oC during the entirefabrication process.
