  1. 1. Time-resolved Structural and Mechanistic Studies of Water Oxidation in Photosystem II : water here, water there, water everywhere

    Author : Casper de Lichtenberg; Johannes Messinger; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Holger Dau; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxygenic Photosynthesis; Photosystem II; TR-MIMS; isotope exchange; EPR; EDNMR; water splitting; water oxidation;

    Abstract : Oxygenic photosynthesis is undisputedly one of the most important chemical processes for human life on earth as it not only fills the atmosphere with the oxygen that we need to breathe, but also sustains the accumulation of biomass, which is not only used as nourishment but is also present in almost every aspect of our lives as building material, textiles in clothes and furniture, or even as living decorations to name a few.The photosynthetic water-splitting mechanism is catalyzed by a water:plastoquinone oxido-reductase by the name of photosystem II (PSII), which is embedded in the thylakoid membranes of plants, algae and cyanobacteria. 2. 2. Water oxidation : From Molecular Systems to Functional Devices

    Author : Quentin Daniel; Licheng Sun; Marc Robert; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Water oxidation; Renewable energy; Electrochemistry; EPR; Devices; Molecular system; Characterization; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The production of hydrogen gas, through the process of water splitting,is one of the most promising concepts for the production of clean andrenewable fuel.The introduction of this thesis provides a brief overview of fossil fuelsand the need for an energy transition towards clean and renewable energy. 3. 3. Artificial Photosynthesis: Molecular Catalysts for Water Oxidation

    Author : Lei Wang; Licheng Sun; Hiroshi Imahori; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; artificial photosynthesis; water oxidation; ruthenium complexes; nickel complexes; cerium; photo-catalysts; photosensitizer; electrochemistry; immobilization.; Kemi; Chemistry; Energiteknik; Energy Technology;

    Abstract : Artificial photosynthesis provides a promising solution to the future sustainable energy system. Water is the only suitably sufficient protons and electrons supplier by the reaction of water oxidation. However, this reaction is both kinetically and thermodynamically demanding, leading to a sluggish kinetics unless the introduction of a catalyst. READ MORE

  4. 4. Substrate water binding to the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II

    Author : Håkan Nilsson; Johannes Messinger; Wolfgang Schröder; Robert L. Burnap; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Photosynthesis; Photosystem II; water oxidation; oxygen evolution; substrate water exchange; membrane-inlet mass spectrometry;

    Abstract : Oxygenic photosynthesis in plants, algae and cyanobacteria converts sunlight into chemical energy. In this process electrons are transferred from water molecules to CO2 leading to the assembly of carbohydrates, the building blocks of life. READ MORE

  5. 5. Photosynthetic water oxidation : the function of two extrinsic proteins

    Author : Tatiana Shutova; Göran Samuelsson; Stenbjörn Styring; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; photosystem II; Psb0; Cah3; water oxidation; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : The solar energy accumulated by photosynthesis over billions of years is the sole source of energy available on Earth. Photosystem II (PSII) uses the sunlight to split water, an energetically unfavorable reaction where electrons and protons are extracted from water and oxygen is released as a by-product. READ MORE
