  1. 1. Species Limits and Systematics in Some Passerine Birds

    Author : Per Alström; Timothy M. Crowe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organismic biology; Mirafra; Seicercus; Phylloscopus; Motacilla; species concepts; species limits; phylogeny; morphology; vocalisations; mitochondrial DNA; nuclear DNA; incongruence; Organismbiologi; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; systematisk zoologi; Systematic Zoology;

    Abstract : I use morphological, vocal, molecular, behavioural, ecological and distributional data to re-evaluate the systematics of three passerine bird groups, the Mirafraassamica complex (bush-larks), the genus Seicercus ("spectacled-warblers"; with emphasis on the the S. burkii complex) and the genus Motacilla (wagtails). 2. 2. Migratory behavior and its genetic basis in willow warblers Phylloscopus trochilus

    Author : Kristaps Sokolovskis; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bird migration; behavioral genetics; light level geolocator; Phylloscopus trochilus; willow warbler;

    Abstract : Right before northern hemisphere’s summer shifts to autumn small insect-eatingbirds start lengthy journeys to tropical regions. It is well established that temporarylack food and annual changes in weather are the ultimate reasons for this behavior.On a proximal level however, the process is poorly understood. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hybrid zone dynamics, assortative mating, and migratory programmes in a willow warbler migratory divide

    Author : Keith W. Larson; Susanne Åkesson; Staffan Bensch; Martin Schaefer; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; migratory divide; phenotype; willow warbler; hybrid zone; tension zone; Phylloscopus trochilus; migratype; assortative mating; migration; biology; biologi; evolutionär genetik; evolutionary genetics; migratory divide; phenotype; willow warbler; hybrid zone; tension zone; Phylloscopus trochilus; migratype; assortative mating; migration;

    Abstract : In this thesis I will compare and contrast the two willow warbler subspecies (Phylloscopus trochilus trochilus and P. t. acredula) with differing migratory phenotypes (or "migratype") in the context of their migratory divide and hybrid zone in central Sweden. Their migratory programs differ in the direction and distance traveled during migration. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cooperation and conflict during reproduction in polyterritorial wood warblers (Phylloscopus sibilatrix)

    Author : Susanne Stenius; Trond Amundsen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the reproductive strategies of male and female wood warblers are studied. Males which arrived early to the breeding grounds had higher reproductive success than later males. This was due to early males more often mating polygynously than late males. READ MORE
