11. Advancing Evolutionary Biology: Genomics, Bayesian Statistics, and Machine Learning
Abstract : During the recent decades the field of evolutionary biology has entered the era of big data, which has transformed the field into an increasingly computational discipline. In this thesis I present novel computational method developments, including their application in empirical case studies. READ MORE

12. Spatiotemporal Evolution of Neotropical Organisms: New Insights into an Old Riddle
Abstract : Nowhere else on Earth are there so many species of plants and animals as in the Neotropical region. Yet, many questions remain concerning the causes underlying such outstanding diversification. READ MORE

13. Mitochondrial and Eukaryotic Origins : A Phylogenetic Perspective
Abstract : Mitochondria are eukaryotic cellular organelles responsible for power-generation, believed to have come into existence by an endo-symbiontic event where a bacterial cell was incorporated by an un-specified "proto-eukaryote". Phylogenetic analysis have shown that the mitochondrial ancestor was most related to present-day alpha-proteobacteria, although the exact nature of the mitochondrial progenitor remains disputed. 14. Genomic and evolutionary exploration of Asgard archaea
Abstract : Current evolutionary theories postulate that eukaryotes emerged from the symbiosis of an archaeal host with, at least, one bacterial symbiont. However, our limited grasp of microbial diversity hampers insights into the features of the prokaryotic ancestors of eukaryotes. READ MORE

15. Genomic and morphological diversity of marine planktonic diatom-diazotroph associations : a continuum of integration and diversification through geological time
Abstract : Symbioses between eukaryotes and nitrogen (N2)-fixing cyanobacteria (or diazotrophs) are quite common in the plankton community. A few genera of diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) such as Rhizosolenia, Hemiaulus and Chaetoceros are well known to form symbioses with the heterocystous diazotrophic cyanobacteria Richelia intracellularis and Calothrix rhizosoleniae.
