21. Atomic Scale Degradation of Zirconium Alloys for Nuclear Applications
Abstract : Due to their low thermal neutron capture cross-section, zirconium alloys are widely used in the nuclear industry as fuel cladding and for structural components. The lifetime of the fuel assemblies in the reactors is primarily dictated by the ability of the cladding to withstand oxidation and hydrogen pick-up from the coolant water and radiation damage induced by the neutron flux. 22. Unravelling Sensitisation and Quenching Pathways in Lanthanide Luminophores
Abstract : Lanthanide (Ln) ions find use in cellular detection and probing of many analytes, owing to their unique photophysical properties. However, to make the Ln emission efficient, one has to develop a light-harvesting antenna, which is an organic chromophore that absorbs and transfers energy to the Ln. READ MORE

23. Kinetic Measurements Using Nanoplasmonic Sensing
Abstract : In this thesis the nanoplasmonic sensing technique was used to study kinetics of (i) the oxidation of Al nanoparticles in air and water and (ii) the solid-liquid phase transition in Sn nanoparticles. The nanoplasmonic sensing technique detects changes of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in metal nanoparticles. READ MORE

24. Modification of microcapsules for controlled release
Abstract : Fouling of marine organisms such as algae and barnacles on the boat hull is an enormous problem for the shipping industry. The negative consequences for the society are both economical and environmental. To prevent fouling in general, biocides are typically incorporated directly into the paint. READ MORE

25. Investigating polymorphism in small molecules using three-dimensional electron diffraction
Abstract : For scientific, regulatory and intellectual property reasons, the discovery and characterisation of polymorphic systems is an integral aspect of the development process of any solid-formulated drug product. Yet, these studies are often hindered by crystal quality and size, poor yields and the generation of mixtures of phases. READ MORE
