16. Mathematical Models of Molecular Evolution
Abstract : This thesis deals with mathematical models of Darwinian evolution in populations of simple living organisms. We study models which describe how the representation of different gene sequences in the population is affected by the fundamental forces of evolutionary processes, such as selection pressure, the mutation rate and the time dynamics of the underlying fitness landscape. 17. Sceletal muscle characteristics and physical activity patterns in COPD
Abstract : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Besides abnormities within the respiratory system COPD is also associated with effects outside the lungs, so called systemic effects. READ MORE

18. Adolescent nutrition in rural Bangladesh : Studies on diet, cardiometabolic indicators, physical activity and fitness in the MINIMat cohort
Abstract : Adolescent nutrition is crucial for curbing non-communicable disease burden among transitioning populations in resource-limited settings. This thesis explored the gender and socio-economic stratification of diet, physical activity (PA) and fitness, and the relationship of these modifiable dimensions of nutrition with cardiometabolic risk among adolescents of a birth cohort in rural Bangladesh. 19. The role of physical activity for recovery after surgical procedures
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to determine the association between and effect of preoperative physical activity and postoperative recovery after surgery due to gallbladder disease or colorectal cancer. Paper I examined the association between self-reported level of physical activity before cholecystectomy and postoperative recovery in an observational cohort study. READ MORE

20. Cause-Specific Mortality and Physical Fitness in Mental Disorders - Epidemiological and Internventional Studies
Abstract : Mental illnesses are common and constitute a substantial health-related and financial burden on both the individual and society. Mental disorders in general have increased risk of somatic morbidity. An early age of onset is commonly seen in anxiety disorders and the prevalence of these disorders has increased in youth in recent years. READ MORE
