  1. 6. Plasma environment of an intermediately active comet : Evolution and dynamics observed by ESA's Rosetta spacecraft at 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

    Author : Elias Odelstad; Anders Eriksson; Andrew Coates; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Rosetta; comet; 67P; RPC-LAP; RPC-MIP; RPC-ICA; RPC-MAG; ROSINA-COPS; Langmuir probe; spacecraft potential; plasma; Churyumov-Gerasimenko; ion composition analyzer; diamagnetic cavity; ion velocity; electron temperature; ion-neutral drag; collisional coupling; wake effects; filamentation; electron cooling; plasma waves; hybrid waves; Bernstein waves; minimum variance; polarization; wavelet; density fluctuations; magnetic field oscillations; drift-cyclotron instability; asymmetric plasma and magnetic field enhancements; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the evolution and dynamics of the plasma environment of a moderately active comet before, during and after its closest approach to the Sun. For over 2 years in 2014-2016, the European Space Agency’s Rosetta spacecraft followed the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko at distances typically between a few tens and a few hundred kilometers from the nucleus, the longest and closest inspection of a comet ever made. 2. 7. Ion dynamics and structure of collisionless shocks in space

    Author : Andreas Johlander; Andris Vaivads; Robert F. Wimmer-Schweingruber; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : Shock waves form when supersonic flows encounter an obstacle. Like in regular gases, shock waves can form in a plasma - a gas of electrically charged particles. Shock waves in plasmas where collisions between particles are very rare are referred to as collisionless shock waves. READ MORE

  3. 8. Energy Conversion and Particle Acceleration at Turbulent Plasma Jet Fronts

    Author : Louis Richard; Yuri V. Khotyaintsev; Daniel B. Graham; Andris Vaivads; Emiliya Yordanova; Vassilis Angelopoulos; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plasma jets; Magnetic reconnection; Particle acceleration; Magnetosphere; Magnetospheric Multiscale; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : High-speed plasma flows (jets) are ubiquitous phenomena in the visible Universe. When the fast plasma flow encounters the ambient plasma at rest, it forms a front where its kinetic energy is dissipated. At the jet front, charged particles gain energy from the electromagnetic fields through heating and acceleration. READ MORE

  4. 9. Plasma and Dust around Icy Moon Enceladus and Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

    Author : Ilka. A. D. Engelhardt; Anders Eriksson; Ingrid Mann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : Saturn's moon Enceladus and comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko both are examples of icy solar system objects from which gas and dust flow into space. At both bodies, the gas becomes partly ionized and the dust grains get charged. READ MORE

  5. 10. Modelling and Measurements of MAST Neutron Emission

    Author : Iwona Klimek; Marco Cecconello; Jozef Ongena; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fusion; plasma diagnostics; neutron emissivity and rate; Neutron Camera; tokamak; MAST; Fysik med inriktning mot tillämpad kärnfysik; Physics with specialization in Applied Nuclear Physics;

    Abstract : Measurements of neutron emission from a fusion plasma can provide a wealth of information on the underlying temporal, spatial and energy distributions of reacting ions and how they are affected by a wide range of magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) instabilities.This thesis focuses on the interpretation of the experimental measurements recorded by neutron flux monitors with and without spectroscopic capabilities installed on the Mega Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST).
