  1. 6. The Late Holocene history of beech Fagus sylvatica and Norway spruce Picea abies at stand-scale in southern Sweden

    Author : Leif Björkman; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; physical geography; Geology; south Sweden; Late Holocene; succession; disturbance; forest history; forest continuity; population dynamics; immigration; palaeoecology; pollen analysis; Fagus sylvatica; Picea abies; Geologi; fysisk geografi; Palaeobotany; phylogeny; palynology; Paleobotanik; fylogeni; palynologi;

    Abstract : High resolution pollen analysis was carried out on five peat profiles from small forest hollows at four sites in southern Sweden. The general aim was to investigate the establishment of Fagus sylvatica and Picea abies at stand-scale. READ MORE

  2. 7. Past demography and local adaptation in forest trees : Insights from natural populations and breeding programs of Norway spruce

    Author : Lili Li; Martin Lascoux; Brunno Fady; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; clines; demographic history; local adaptation; Picea abies; Picea obovata; population genetic structure; Swedish breeding program; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : Spatial changes in natural selection patterns can give rise to local adaptation and genetic differentiation between populations. Local adaptation for phenological traits is pronounced in many forest tree species. READ MORE

  3. 8. Composition of lignin in outer cell-wall layers

    Author : Maria Christiernin; Gunnar Henriksson; Gösta Brunow; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Lignin; thioacidolysis; primary wall; middle lamella; Populus balsamifera; Populus tremula L. x P. tremuloides Michx.; Picea abies; Picea glauca; Cellulose and paper engineering; Cellulosa- och pappersteknik;

    Abstract : The composition of lignin in the outer cell-wall layers of spruce and poplar has been studied and the data obtained have been compared with those of the mature reference wood in which the secondary cell wall predominates. Materials with exclusively or predominantly outer cell-wall layers were examined. READ MORE

  4. 9. Aquaporin homologues in Norway spruce (Picea abies)

    Author : Peter Oliviusson; David I. Dunstan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : The recent discovery of aquaporins - proteins that mediate bidirectional passage of water over membranes - provides a molecular basis for the underlying processes in plant water relations. In plants, aquaporins are found in plasma membranes and in vacuolar membranes (tonoplasts) and are suggested to participate in dynamic operations such as cell elongation, osmotic regulation, and long-distance transport.     Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bud set; circadian clock; Picea abies; growth cessation; phosphatidyl ethanolamine-binding protein PEBP genes; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär funktionsgenomik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Functional Genomics;

    Abstract : Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) is a conifer belonging to the group gymnosperms and is an ecologically and economically important species in several parts of Europe. READ MORE
