  1. 1. Competition, Coexistence and Character Displacement In a Young Avian Hybrid Zone

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Niclas Vallin; Uppsala universitet.; [2011]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Competition; coexistence; hybridization; ecological speciation; character displacement; pied flycatcher; collared flycatcher; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi; Zooekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the ecological and evolutionary implications of a recent secondary contact between two closely related bird species: collared (Ficedula albicollis) and pied (F. hypoleuca) flycatchers. READ MORE

  2. 2. Speciation - What Can be Learned from a Flycatcher Hybrid Zone?

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Chris Wiley; Uppsala universitet.; [2006]
    Keywords : Biology; speciation; reinforcement; fitness; postzygotic isolation; asymmetrical hybridization; hybrid zone; species recognition; mate choice; sexual selection; direct benefits; parasite resistance; delayed plumage maturation; Ficedula hypoleuca; Ficedula albicollis; flycatcher; Biologi;

    Abstract : Studies of hybrid zones offer important insights into the process of speciation. Much of the knowledge to be gained is dependent on an accurate estimation of the strength of pre- and post-zygotic isolation between hybridizing taxa. My results demonstrate that hybridization can variously affect different components of fitness. READ MORE

  3. 3. Sexual Signals and Speciation A Study of the Pied and Collared Flycatcher

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Jon Haavie; Uppsala universitet.; [2004]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Speciation; Sexual signals; Hybridization; Reinforcement; Song; Female preference; Sex-linkage; Biologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi;

    Abstract : Speciation is the process in which reproductive barriers evolve between populations. In this thesis I examine how sexual signals contribute to the maintenance, reinforcement or breakdown of reproductive barriers.Male pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) and collared flycatchers (F. albicollis) differ in song and plumage traits. 4. 4. Responses to reduced industrial metal emissions An ecotoxicological study on Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca, Aves)

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå universitet, Institutionen för ekologi, miljö och geovetenskap

    Author : Åsa Berglund; Umeå universitet.; [2010]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Cell and molecular biology Toxicology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Cell- och molekylärbiologi Toxikologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Other biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Övrig biologi; ekotoxikologi; Ecotoxicology; zooekologi; Animal Ecology; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Metals have been used by humans for thousands of years, and this has resulted in increased concentrations in the biosphere. The environment around point-sources, such as mines and smelters, are of particular concern, as metals may accumulate to high concentrations, and potentially reach levels toxic to the local flora and fauna. 5. 5. Avian Malaria and Interspecific Interactions in Ficedula Flycatchers

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : William Jones; Uppsala universitet.; [2019]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ficedula; flycatcher; avian malaria; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Parasitism is a core theme in ecological and evolutionary studies. Despite this, there are still gaps in our knowledge regarding host-parasite interactions in nature. READ MORE
